Nicola Sturgeon will work with anyone who supports the break-up of the UK, say Scottish Tories

May 20, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Nicola Sturgeon has been accused of working with “anyone so long as they support the break-up of the UK” after meeting Sinn Fein’s vice president at her official residence. The First Minister held talks with Michelle O’Neill at Bute House in Edinburgh, after Sinn Fein became the largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly for the first time at the Stormont election earlier this month. Ms O’Neill could now become Northern Ireland’s first nationalist first minister, meaning two of the three devolved administrations would be led by parties determined to hold votes on leaving the UK. Ms Sturgeon is expected to unveil legislation shortly for a second independence referendum , to be staged next year, while Sinn Fein wants a vote on Irish reunification . It is understood the two leaders did not discuss their joint interest in secession, instead focusing on the cost of living crisis, the Northern Ireland Protocol and the formation of a new Northern Ireland Executive. … [Read more...] about Nicola Sturgeon will work with anyone who supports the break-up of the UK, say Scottish Tories

Boris Johnson’s former Remainer dad becomes a French citizen

May 20, 2022 by metro.co.uk

Boris Johnson ’s dad is keeping his ties to the EU after taking up French citizenship. Stanley Johnson, 81, was famously an impassioned Remainer, despite his son being the face of the Brexit campaign. But he’s recently renounced his views, writing that leaving the EU was ‘probably a good idea’ after all. He also said he found the bloc’s response to the war in Ukraine disappointing, but he made sure to get his European citizenship first. Mr Johnson, from Cornwall, started his application to ‘reclaim’ his identity as a Frenchman last November. His links to to the country come from his French mum, Irene Williams. Typically, the descendants of French nationals cannot claim nationality if they have been in a different country for more than 50 years. But people can still get citizenship if they can prove ‘concrete ties of a cultural, professional, economic or family nature’. Mr Johnson, who is fluent in French, reportedly demonstrated this in his application. … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson’s former Remainer dad becomes a French citizen

Mr Johnson, 80, is a former Conservative member of the European Parliament and voted remain in the 2016 referendum, as his son Boris spearheaded the Leave campaign. Speaking to RTL, he said: ‘It is not a question of becoming French. If I understand correctly, I am French. My mother was born in France. Her mother was completely French, as was her grandfather. ‘So for me it is a question of reclaiming what I already have. I will always be European. ‘That is certain.
