Denmark's Social Democrat leader is set to become the country's youngest ever prime minister following weeks of negotiations for a new government she said would focus on climate, welfare and immigration. At 41, Mette Frederiksen managed to defeat the sitting liberal Prime Minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, who held the office between 2009 and 2011, and again since 2015, with the support of the Danish People's Party. The anti-immigrant and euro-sceptic party which has shaped Denmark's restrictive immigration policies since the early 2000s, effectively collapsed in June 5 elections, depriving the centre-right government of its main support in Parliament. As restrictive immigration policies have been broadly adopted by most other parties, the Danish People's Party lost its unique appeal with voters. In a country where minority governments are the norm, negotiations for a new government centred around conflicting demands on climate, economic and immigration policy. The three-week … [Read more...] about Denmark’s Social Democrat leader forms leftist govt
Denmark's Social Democrat leader has announced she will form a minority government after reaching an agreement with three left and centre-left parties after weeks of negotiations. "Now we have reached the goal... we have shown that when Danes vote as they have done, a new majority can turn their hopes into actions," said Mette Frederiksen, who at 41 years old will become Denmark's youngest ever prime minister. In a country where minority governments are the norm, the negotiations centred around conflicting demands on climate, economic and immigration policy. Frederiksen said she will present the 18-page agreement on Wednesday, with the new government expected to be unveiled on Thursday. The three-week negotiations were the longest in Denmark since 1988. "It is a political document, one of the first in the world, that really defines green ambitions," she said, highlighting one of key concerns among voters and left-wing parties. "We will develop a climate plan, a binding law on climate … [Read more...] about Denmark’s Social Democrat leader forms new leftist govt
Denmark's Social Democrat leader has announced she will form a minority government after reaching an agreement with three left and centre-left parties, weeks after a general election. "Now we have reached the goal... we have shown that when Danes vote as they have done, a new majority can turn their hopes into actions," said Mette Frederiksen, who at 41 is set to become the country's youngest-ever prime minister. Denmark has become the third Nordic country this year to form a leftist government. While the new left-leaning government is unlikely to fundamentally change Denmark's economic policy, Frederiksen has promised to increase welfare spending after years of austerity. A bloc of five left-leaning opposition parties led by Frederiksen's Social Democratic Party won a majority in a June 5 election, prompting centre-right leader Lars Lokke Rasmussen to resign as prime minister. "It is with great pleasure I can announce that after three weeks of negotiations, we have a majority to form … [Read more...] about Denmark’s Social Democrat leader forms new leftist government
Despite removing a key sticking point on the new North American free trade pact, issues remain before Congress will vote to approve it, a top Democratic leader said Tuesday. President Donald Trump last agreed to remove contentious tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from Mexico and Canada but Congressman Steny Hoyer of Maryland said Democrats continue to have concerns about workers' rights, dispute resolution and other issues in the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement. "We're not there yet," Hoyer, who is the House majority leader, told reporters. "We'd like to get to a yes." The three countries agreed on a revised free trade pact late last year after months of negotiations but Ottawa and Mexico City said they would not ratify the deal unless the steel and aluminum tariffs were removed. US congressional leaders from both parties also demanded the tariffs end before they would approve the trade pact. Trump has hailed the USMCA as a major improvement over the 24-year-old NAFTA which he … [Read more...] about US Democratic leader says issues remain on USMCA trade deal
