The Ukrainian president congratulated the Ukrainians on this important event in Ukraine's history. Photo from UNIAN Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko says that the tomos, a decree of autocephaly (independence), which has been granted to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, is as important as the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine. "It will be the last stage of the establishment of the independence of the Ukrainian state. It will enhance religious freedom, inter-Orthodox peace, give more rights and freedoms to citizens, especially those who were excluded from the Ecumenical relations and who were unfairly called uncanonical," Poroshenko said after an official ceremony in Istanbul where Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I handed the tomos over to leader of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Metropolitan Epifaniy (Epiphanius) of Kyiv and All Ukraine. The Ukrainian president congratulated the Ukrainians on this important event in Ukraine's history. "Dear Ukrainians! Catalonia's regional parliament declared independence from Spain on Friday in a disputed vote that is now likely to be declared illegal by Spain's constitutional court. Fredreka Schouten USA TODAY Published 8:46 p.m. UTC Jul 29, 2018 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Charles Koch and top officials in the powerful network aligned with him warned Sunday that Republicans should no longer take their financial support for granted – as Koch-aligned groups work to dramatically expand their free-market message to more parts of American society. Koch, the billionaire industrialist at the center of the conservative network, told reporters that he regrets his support of politicians who "say they are going to be for these principles we espouse, and then they aren’t." "We are going ... to hold people responsible for their commitments,” he said during the second day of a retreat with more than 500 donors whose financial help has helped make the network one of the most powerful forces in Republican politics. Koch also criticized Trump’s tariff battles with China, Mexico and other countries, saying the president's action on … [Read more...] about Charles Koch seeks to declare independence from the Republican Party
Harvard scholars discovered a copy of the Declaration of Independence two years ago in an unlikely place: a public records office in England. The document was then sent to the British Library for further tests, which have revealed a little more about its story. It's become known as the Sussex Declaration after the English county where the Harvard researchers discovered it. The handwritten parchment is a word-for-word copy of the document written by the Founding Fathers right down to the signatories carefully copied out by a long-dead clerk, reports CBS News' Elizabeth Palmer. Dr. Christina Duffy, an imaging scientist at the British Library, said it's "definitely real." Clues are embedded in a corner of the document. They help answer questions about who made it, and why. You can see someone tried to erase the date, but with UV light, Duffy was able to bring the numbers back, at least partly. "Our theory is it's Fourth of July 1780s or 1790s," Duffy said. That means is was … [Read more...] about Analysis reveals clues about Declaration of Independence copy found in U.K.
The UK’s Independent newspaper got more than it bargained for when it published an article sarcastically asking how independence from the former British Empire was working out for Americans — on the 4th of July. The article criticized the “bulbous shape” of US President Donald Trump, the “abysmally sycophantic shape” of both houses of Congress and the “atrophied state” of the judiciary. The author also blasted Trump’s so-called “Muslim ban” and wrote that the US was a land that “steals and incarcerates brown-skinned babies” in a reference to Trump’s “zero-tolerance” immigration policies. But Americans were having none of it — and they took to Twitter to let the Independent know about it. Some Twitter users pointed out through memes that a British publication should probably not be lecturing the US on that day in particular, given the fact that it was the British Empire that … [Read more...] about ‘How’s independence working out?’ UK newspaper faces Twitter wrath over 4th of July article
