The issue of the tender extension at St Vincent De Paule and the award by direct order (as officially published in the Government Gazette) is not something that Government can discard with a simple statement saying there was a mistake on the government gazette, the Partit Demokratiku has said. The Times of Malta had reported that a €274 million direct order was made regarding a still-to-be-built, 500-bed extension at St Vincent de Paul, and that Parliamentary Secretary Anthony Agius Decelis had said that the listing was a mistake. "The appearance of the arrangement in the Government Gazette, one way or another, does not change the fact that the entire process behind this contract has been irregular from beginning to end. The Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing and Persons with Disability, Anthony Agius Decelis, said that the important thing is that, “at the end of the day, everybody is compliant” to the proper accessibility standards. Decelis replying to questions by The Malta Independent after the Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability (CRPD) said, in its annual report, that it had rejected 70% of the applications for a compliance certificate, which states that a building is in line with accessibility guidelines. All public buildings and government housing units must be compliant with the guidelines, as do buildings which are to be converted into boutique hotels, restaurants or similar establishments. Private buildings that contain more than 30 units meanwhile must also be compliant with these same guidelines. Technology courses for residents of elderly homes announced
The elderly living in care homes in Msida, Mosta and Mtarfa are going to have the opportunity to become more familiar with the use of modern technology and of the internet, announced Parliamentary Secretary for Persons with Disability and Active Ageing Anthony Agius Decelis on Monday morning. Speaking at the Msida Home for the Elderly, Agius Decelis explained that the elderly residents of these homes will be given lessons on how to use a tablet and the internet. These lessons will include training on how to send an email, use social media and buy online. Furthermore, those who complete this course will be allowed to keep the tablet that they are taught on. The Welfare Committee, which is responsible for this course, through these lessons is encouraging the elderly to continue improving their knowledge on today’s technology, Agius Decelis said. Sixteen people graduate in Gozo course for Maltese sign language
The Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana and Parliamentary Secretary for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Active Ageing Anthony Agius Decelis, congratulated the graduates and presented them with their certificates/ Minister Caruana said that the commitment of the Ministry for Gozo in this area is achieving the desired results,with certain courses which were previously only provided in Malta are now being made available to Gozo.
