Party-pooper Sturgeon would ruin Eurovision for everyone
Scotland’s largest city has been shortlisted as a possible host for Eurovision 2023. This is a very big deal. A contest that is much derided among the educated classes as naff, camp and irrelevant, just became important now that Britain is to host it for a record-breaking ninth time. And I wish my adopted city every success. It certainly has the credentials, the experience and the facilities to pull off an unforgettable event. On the other hand, this is Scotland, so Eurovision could be about to become the latest pawn in the interminable debate about Scottish independence . Already the omens are not good: Nicola Sturgeon has tweeted her support for Glasgow. On the face of it, this is simply because Sturgeon is the First Minister and also happens to represent a Glasgow seat in the Scottish Parliament. But in Scotland, everything is about independence, and Eurovision would be no different. So we begin with a grievance in waiting: Glasgow is the only non-English venue to … [Read more...] about Party-pooper Sturgeon would ruin Eurovision for everyone

Simon Clarke argued it is “absolutely right” for the new leader to consider “these options in the round” when they take the reins, suggesting they should steer clear of announcing “new uncosted policies” during the election period. It comes after frontrunner Liz Truss – who has Mr Clarke’s backing – hit out at “bizarre” proposals to agree help for rising energy bills with the Government and her rival Rishi Sunak before the contest is over. Mr Sunak said he would welcome a meeting to agree emergency support ahead of the winter, but Ms Truss branded the proposal a “kangaroo committee” at Tuesday’s leadership hustings in … [Read more...] about Ministers working on fresh cost-of-living support package to put to new PM

Water may have been brought to Earth by asteroids, “precious samples” from recent space mission show
Water may have been brought to Earth by asteroids from the outer edges of the solar system, scientists said after analyzing rare samples collected on a six-year Japanese space mission. In a quest to shed light on the origins of life and the formation of the universe, researchers are scrutinizing material brought back to earth in 2020 from the asteroid Ryugu. Japan's Hayabusa2 probe , which is roughly the size of a refrigerator, launched in December 2014, landing on the diamond-shaped asteroid Ryugu, which means "dragon palace" in Japanese, located 185 million miles away. When it plummeted to Earth in 2020, the capsule provided a stunning show above the Australian outback, streaking across the sky as a dazzling fireball. The 5.4 grams (0.2 ounces) of rocks and dust were gathered by the Japanese space probe that landed on the celestial body and fired an "impactor" into its surface. Studies on the material are beginning to be published, and in June, one group of … [Read more...] about Water may have been brought to Earth by asteroids, “precious samples” from recent space mission show
Dog catches monkeypox from owners in first suspected human-to-pet transmission, say researchers
A dog has been diagnosed with monkeypox in the first suspected case of the disease being transmitted from humans to pets. The four-year-old Italian greyhound had been sharing the same bed with its owners at their home in France , according to a report in the medical journal The Lancet. Scientists said the infection among domesticated animals such as cats and dogs has never been reported - and they are calling for more awareness and debate on the need to isolate pets from people with monkeypox . The dog's owners went to a hospital in Paris on 10 June after developing ulcers. Less than two weeks later, the dog showed symptoms such as lesions on its abdomen before it was confirmed by researchers at Sorbonne University that it also had monkeypox. "Our findings should prompt debate on the need to isolate pets from monkeypox virus-positive individuals," the researchers wrote in the report. "We call for further investigation on secondary transmissions via pets." … [Read more...] about Dog catches monkeypox from owners in first suspected human-to-pet transmission, say researchers
Fuming locals want new ceramic statue knocked down because it ‘looks like a kebab’
Hundreds of Cornish people have been left outraged after realising that their new ceramic statue, which is the world's tallest and costs £80k, looks like a kebab. St Austell's new 'Earth Goddess' figure was created by artist Sandy Brown to celebrate the heritage of China clay and unveiled on June 5 but locals have relentlessly mocked the 11.5m high 'eyesore'. Standing taller than two double-decker buses it has been called 'The Pork Sword', likening it to a kebab and one person has even referred to it as "an offence to God". READ MORE: Brits could be forced to leave windows filthy for months due to drought Priced at £80,000, the statue aimed to put the town 'on the map' after three years of construction.
