Shamima Begum seen at Syrian refugee camp after being told she can’t return to UK

· February 26, 2021 ·

Shamima Begum has been seen for the first time since the Supreme Court ruled she cannot return to the UK to pursue an appeal against the removal of her British citizenship. Footage shows the 21-year-old ISIS bride walking through the al-Roj detention camp where she has been living in northern Syria following the collapse of the terror group's Middle East stronghold. British-born Ms Begum was wearing sunglasses, a jacket, t-shirt, leggings and white trainers when the video was recorded by an ITV News crew. She was usually seen wearing traditional clothing when tracked down by journalists in the past. In the video, she appears to turn her face away from the news camera and walk hurriedly towards a cluster of tens as children play outside. She declined to comment, ITV news reported. Ms Begum was 15 when she and two other east London schoolgirls travelled to Syria to join the so-called Islamic State group (IS) in February 2015. Her British citizenship was revoked on … [Read more...] about Shamima Begum seen at Syrian refugee camp after being told she can’t return to UK

COVID-19: First travellers released from hotel quarantine – ‘It was horrible’

· February 26, 2021 ·

Some of the first people to check into quarantine hotels have had their first taste of freedom upon their release today after self-isolating for 11 nights. From last Monday, UK and Irish nationals returning to England from a "red list" country deemed at high risk for COVID-19 have had to check into quarantine hotels. Hotel "guests" have criticised the £1,750 fee for the stay , which is punishable by a fine of up to £10,000 or 10 years in prison if breached. The rule applies to people returning to Scotland from any destination. One couple, Wagner and Elaine Araujo, who were among the first people to be released from hotel quarantine, said the experience was "horrible" but they enjoyed spending quality time together. UK campsites devastated as thousands to remain closed until May 17 due to shared toilet rules

· February 26, 2021 ·

UK campsites with shared facilities have been left off the list when it comes to reopening, after the government announced some holidays can resume from April 12. However, this is only for self-catered accommodation , where there are no shared facilities - meaning campsites that have shower and toilet blocks are not included. Instead, they will reopen from May 17 , along with hotels, meaning many are missing out on the end of the Easter holidays. Martin Smith, founder of Campsites.co.uk , said they have seen a booking boom of 300 per cent following the announcement, but that they were being unfairly penalised due to the shared toilet and shower facilities. He warned: "Under the current roadmap, pubs and shops can open their toilet facilities for customers from April 12, but campsites must keep theirs closed until May 17. "This matters, because it stops thousands of campsites opening for the early Bank Holiday weekend, depriving independent sites the chance to claw … [Read more...] about UK campsites devastated as thousands to remain closed until May 17 due to shared toilet rules

Israel, UK mull return of sports fans after mass COVID-19 vaccinations

· January 26, 2021 ·

Matchgoing fans were among those to have been hit fairly early on by the pandemic. Now, about a year into life with COVID-19, mass crowds are largely still banned from sports games. But many fans are now hanging their hopes on the newly-developed vaccines. With Israel and the UK among the countries with the world's highest vaccination rates, both provide a glimpse of how sports events could soon be carried out with mass crowds in attendance. 10,000 fans at an Israeli football game?
