David Davis delays grilling from MPs until the last day before Summer break
David Davis has delayed a grilling from MPs, originally planned for this week, until the last possible moment before Parliament goes on its summer break. The delay will add weight to speculation the Government's Brexit plan may be delayed even further. The Mirror revealed on Friday the Brexit Secretary had asked for his scheduled appearance before the Brexit Select Committee to be rescheduled. And today, committee members were told his appearance, alongside top Brexit civil servant Olly Robbins, will take place on the afternoon of the last day of term. A message to committee members, seen by the Mirror, said: “It has now been confirmed that the Secretary of State and Oliver Robbins will appear before the Committee at 2pm on Tuesday 24 July (a meeting in the morning that day is not possible due to Cabinet business).” And MPs and their staff have been warned that they could be called in for the committee even if Parliament breaks up earlier than expected. Tory David Davis under fire for spending £100k on private and RAF flights
Tory David Davis came under fire today for spending almost £100,000 of taxpayers' money in the space of a year on RAF flights to and from Europe. Newly released data shows the Brexit secretary has made 22 trips that involved RAF jets, some of which were multi-leg journeys. The total cost over the last 12 months was £100,952. The Department for Exiting the European Union argue he needs the convenience and security of chartered flights because he travels so frequently and at such short notice. But fellow MPs have grown frustrated with the eye-watering cost of his flights - which have been branded "Air David Davis. Peter Kyle MP, a leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said: “Jet Set Davy loves to play with our money but has won nothing for the people of Britain with it. "He’s surely one of the least successful ministers in even this sorry state of a government. “Instead of spending more and more money on RAF jets for ministerial junkets we … [Read more...] about Tory David Davis under fire for spending £100k on private and RAF flights
David Davis skips committee grilling fuelling concern of Brexit plan delay
David Davis has delayed a planned Brexit committee grilling, fuelling concerns the publication of the Government's plan for leaving the EU has been delayed. The Brexit Secretary promised the Brexit White Paper would be a "detailed, ambitious and precise explanations of our positions." It was originally slated to be published before this week's EU Council summit. Later, that expectation shifted to next week. The Brexit Secretary and top civil servant Olly Robbins were due to give evidence to the Commons Brexit Select Committee on Wednesday. But the Mirror understands the pair have contacted the committee to reschedule their appearance, and suggested they reconvene on the last day before the Summer recess. Committee members are concerned the delay could signal yet another delay to the vital document's publication. A message to committee members, seen by the Mirror, says Mr Davis and Mr Robbins have "offered to find a time after the White Paper is published, but before the summer … [Read more...] about David Davis skips committee grilling fuelling concern of Brexit plan delay
Brexit transition ‘unlikely to be sufficient’ for services industry, David Davis and Michel Barnier told
Europe's services industry has written to chief Brexit negotiators David Davis and Michel Barnier, urging the pair to agree to extend the transition period. Currently, the period - during which the UK will remain part of the Single Market and customs union and subject to ECJ jurisdiction - will run from March 29 2019 until December 31 2020. But there are growing fears that this will not be long enough, particularly as it becomes increasingly likely the period will be used to hammer out the future relationship rather than simply 'implement' the changes. "Based on our experience of trade negotiations, we are concerned that - even with the strongest political will from both sides - a period of 21 months is unlikely to be sufficient to cover all the stages needed to put in place the future relationship," the European Services Forum chairman Noel Clehane writes. "We therefore call on negotiators to provide clarity as soon as possible on the Withdrawal Agreement and to allow for some … [Read more...] about Brexit transition ‘unlikely to be sufficient’ for services industry, David Davis and Michel Barnier told
