Budget 2021: Lifetime financial aid to be given to UK Thalidomide victims
Victims of Thalidomide are set to receive financial support for the rest of their lives, it is expected to be announced. The Chancellor is expected to announce at next week’s Budget that the Thalidomide Health Grant, which has been providing support since April 2013, will be extended. The grant currently provides help to more than 400 people in the United Kingdom through direct cash grants to help access personalised specialist care, rehabilitation and treatment. Despite only currently running until April 2023, Rishi Sunak is expected to make a lifetime commitment to fund the scheme – with a £39m down payment that will cover the next four years. Future funding figures for the grant will then be confirmed every four years. Parents and guardians of children self-isolating will receive £500 support payment
The Government will make a one-off payment of £500 to low-income parents and guardians of children needing to self-isolate during the pandemic. The eligibility criteria for the Government's Test and Trace Support Scheme has now been updated to include "a parent or guardian who is staying off work to look after a child who is self-isolating". Work and Pensions Minister Justin Tomlinson announced the development at the Commons on Tuesday. The news comes after Labour called last month for the one-off payment to be available to anyone who does not have access to occupational sick pay and low-income parents of self-isolating children. The £500 Test and Trace Support Scheme, introduced in September, offers financial help to people on low incomes who cannot work during their self-isolation period and will, as a result, lose income. Coronation Street's Trevor Michael Georges has been hailed a "hero" by fans after he stepped in to help a homeless man dragged under a tram. The actor, who plays Ed Bailey in the ITV soap, stayed with the man until an ambulance came. Georges was shopping in Manchester when he saw the man being dragged under a tram he told followers on Twitter , as first reported by the Manchester Evening News . "Went shopping in Manchester only to see a homeless guy dragged under a tram," he tweeted. "Gave him a fag and stayed with him till the ambulance came. Stay safe people please!" The actor, whose character arrived in Weatherfield in June 2019, shared running updates with his followers. The star told them: " He’s in the ambulance (with a packet of fags from me). "Stay safe Atius. I hope your day gets better." And he added: "Shout out to the tram driver too. Wasn’t his fault but the poor guy was really shaken." For three decades Johnny Briggs entertained tens of millions as Coronation Street's unforgettable factory boss Mike Baldwin. Now after the death of the soap legend at the age of 85, we look back at the extraordinary life of the much-loved star. From his childhood as a war evacuee to his incredible success on the cobbles, to wild claims he had bedded a thousand women, the straight-talking actor was a firm favourite of fans. Born in London's Battersea in 1935, as a boy Johnny was evacuated to the countryside during World War II.
