WITH a new year comes brand new trends to be aware of in the confusing world of dating. Modern romance is far from simple, and relationships are never as straightforward as they seem. Last year saw ghosting, cuffing, breadcrumbing, kittenfishing and even Gatsbying enter our dictionaries. Sadly for some, realising the behaviour of our potential partner had an actual label probably killed off a few fledgling relationships. So if you’re back in the dating game, watch out for these new trends which are set to emerge this year. Dating trends expert, Eugénie Legendre, from the dating app Happn, has shed some light on what to look out for in 2019. Prowling This starts off really well, with you finally bagging the date of your dreams. It goes from strength to strength, laying down what you think are the foundations of a solid relationship. And then they disappear, and you don’t see or hear from them in days, or even a week. This may sound familiar, but Eugénie … [Read more...] about From prowling to pocketing – these are the dangerous new dating trends you need to avoid in 2019
GHOSTING is a term that all daters are familiar with by now - but it's so last year. So what is Orbiting? And why is it so bad? We have all the info... What is orbiting? Surprisingly, orbiting has nothing to do with space or science. It's a dating trend that's becoming increasingly popular, and has elements similar to ghosting. While ghosting involves being completely blocked and cut out by someone you were romantically involved with for no apparent reason - orbiting can be a little more confusing. If someone 'orbits' you they'll ghost you on whatever platform you're speaking on, and ignore your texts/Whatsapps and so on, but they'll continue to like your Instagram selfies and/or hilarious Tweets. Sound familiar? We imagine it does - this is very popular in modern day dating, and can be incredibly confusing. The term was first coined by US website Man Repeller, where their writer recalled being ghosted buy a guy - but he continued to follow her, and look at all of her stories. It was … [Read more...] about What is orbiting and is the dating trend worse than ghosting?
As if dating weren't already complicated enough, in this day and age there's a whole dictionary of cringeworthy relationship terms you need to know. So far this year you've probably heard all about Gatsbying and ghosting, but according to the dating experts over at Plenty of Fish there are eight brand new terms you now should be adding to your vocabulary. These include Grande-ing, Instagrandstanding, Scrooging, Banksying, Throning, Cohabidating, You-Turn and Vulturing and even if you're not seeing anyone right now, it seems you may still be guilty of doing one or more of these things. But what exactly do they mean? Grande-ing Inspired by pop sensation Ariana Grande, 'Grande-ing' involves having a personal celebration after a break-up, where one practices gratefulness at the end of a relationship and rejects negativity and bitterness as they move on with their life. As Ari would say: "Thank u, next." Instagrandstanding Instagrandstanding is something you can be guilty of doing even if … [Read more...] about ‘Grande-ing’ is the latest dating trend you need to know about
THOUGHT ghosting was bad? Curving is the toxic new dating trend you need to watch out, coined by The Independent, and it's even worse than being blanked. It's so sneaky most people don't even realise it's happening to them, so have you been a victim? People guilty of curving repeatedly let their dates down, without actually telling them they're not interested. Instead of ghosting your messages, for example, they will reply - but with sporadic texts which often take days to come. When they do eventually get back to you, they'll write something apologetic like: "I'm so sorry for the delay, I've been really busy". Sound familiar? OK we all have busy days at work, or the occasional emergency which means we really can't find time to text, but if this is becoming a habit it may be because they're just not that into you. Another type of curving is when someone makes plans to spend time with you, but then cancels at the last minute, with a vague excuse and promise to do something "soon". "But … [Read more...] about Curving is the toxic new dating trend you need to watch out for… and it’s even WORSE than ghosting
From ghosting to benching, dating trends describe all the weird and woeful ways people behave in the realm of romance. Now, there’s a new term to worry about. Introducing “curving”: when someone rejects you in a way that is so sneaky, you probably won’t even recognise it as rejection. It's a way of letting someone down without actually telling them you're no longer interested. Like most buzzy dating terms, it’s a form of behaviour most singletons will be familiar with, only now there's a word for it. Curving can take many forms. For example, one person may conduct their insidious curving habits via texting. Maybe they take days, or even weeks, to reply to your last WhatsApp message. But instead of leaving you hanging (note: this is ghosting), a curver will reply, but their responses will be sporadic and often apologetic e.g. “I’m so sorry for the delay, I’ve just been really busy with [insert predictable excuse here]”.
