The small European nation faces criticism for its alleged failure to regulate Silicon Valley companies, but is Ireland really compromised by its economy’s reliance on low taxes and tech firms, or is it fulfilling its GDPR duties? Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect last May and states the country that is home to a company’s data controller is the lead regulator. For many companies, like Facebook, Google, and Microsoft, that country is Ireland, which has long attracted Silicon Valley giants thanks to its low corporate taxes. The watchdog Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) is in charge of regulating tech companies, but it has been accused of failing to issue rulings on some key user information issues, from Facebook sharing data with Whatsapp, to Google sharing data across its suite of companies. Alexander Hanff, co-founder of Think Privacy, told RT that “some of the most dangerous threats to democracy, self identity … [Read more...] about Is Ireland the tech giants’ darling, or is it doing its part to protect data?

KIDS as young as eight are being targeted by predators and bombarded with sexually explicit messages on a new social media app, a Sun Online investigation has found. TikTok, which lets users create and share short videos with music and camera effects, has been branded a "magnet for paedophiles" by concerned campaigners and parents. Once logged in with an account, users can then post videos of themselves which are broadcast to other people - any of whom can then message the person directly. Sun Online downloaded the app and within minutes we were confronted by deeply disturbing and sexually suggestive comments underneath videos of young schoolchildren innocently singing or dancing. We saw some users telling young girls to “show me those legs baby come on” and describing them as “sexy”, “hot”, “yummy” and “proper fit”. One sick user said “I’ll risk the arrest…I don’t mind” under a video of a … [Read more...] about Kids as young as eight being groomed by predators on TikTok app that is more popular than Snapchat
London (CNN Business)UK lawmakers have accused Facebook of violating data privacy and competition laws in a report on social media disinformation that also says CEO Mark Zuckerberg showed "contempt" toward parliament by not appearing before them. The UK Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee said in a report published Monday that a trove of internal Facebook emails it reviewed demonstrated that the social media platform had "intentionally and knowingly" violated both data privacy and competition laws. The cache of documents reviewed by the committee, some of which include correspondence between Zuckerberg and company executives, stem from a lawsuit filed in California against Facebook (FB). The committee obtained the documents late last year from a small app company called Six4Three that is behind the suit. According to the committee, the documents show that Facebook was "willing to override its users' privacy settings in order to transfer data" to app developers. The lawmakers … [Read more...] about UK lawmakers: Facebook ‘intentionally and knowingly’ violated data privacy laws
Terms used to target people include 'incest', 'abuse', 'impotence' and 'eating disorders'. Google and a number of major online ad auction companies use data to determine what users watch, read and listen to on the web - and this specific information is used to guide advertisers. Dr Johnny Ryan, a Dubliner working for the privacy browser Brave, has jointly submitted a complaint to the Irish Data Protection Commissioner and its British and Polish counterparts. The EU's GDPR privacy law gives special protection for categories of private data that could expose individuals to particular vulnerability. Most online advertising technology works by profiling a person based on what they look at or do online, before using this information to guide advertisers. But the search giant together with other ad auction companies that operate according to guidelines laid down by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) have gone too far, according to the researchers. "While it is acceptable for a … [Read more...] about Tech companies ‘using sensitive personal data to target users for ads’
