Alibaba Cloud, part of Alibaba Group, has established strategic cooperation with ABC Data, the company has announced. The aim of the cooperation is to provide cloud products and services to Central and Eastern Europe markets, which is to help companies to take advantage of the opportunities offered by digital transformation. As part of the agreement, ABC Data became the exclusive distributor of Alibaba Cloud solutions in Poland and seven other countries of the region: the Czech Republic, Estonia, Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Slovakia and Hungary. Independent News and Media company has advised the 19 people caught up in an alleged data breach the information belonging to them may have been “searched more extensively and for a different purpose” than first thought. In letters issued to past and current employees of INM affected by the alleged breach, the company said the context in which the risk of unauthorised disclosure occurred dated back to 2014 when “a number of INM’s back-up tapes — containing backup copies of electronic data, such as emails to and from INM email addresses and digital files, stored on INM’s servers as at 2014 — were provided to a third-party service provider on the instruction of the then-Chairman of INM.” Leslie Buckley, INM’s former chairman, has already said he will be “robustly defending” similar allegations reportedly made by the Director of Corporate Enforcement Ian Drennan in a High Court affidavit. The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which comes into force on May 25, will govern the storage and processing of data rather than its collection. It also includes some very important consumer rights. The most important are the right to be informed, the right of access, the right to correct errors, the right to erase data, the right to restrict processing, and the right take it elsewhere (data portability). How useful these will be in practice remains to be seen. “Personal data” includes names, addresses, phone numbers and IP addresses, as well as whatGDPR calls “factors specific to the physical, physiological, genetic, mental, economic, cultural or social identity of that natural person”.
