Garstang’s first home game since the middle of February ended with them beating AFC Darwen 3-0. In front of an excellent crowd of 130, both sides produced an exciting game which was full of chances.Garstang should have taken the lead after three minutes when Alan Coar fed brother Ric who, with the keeper to beat, hit his shot straight at the keeper from close range.Garstang were the sharper of the two teams in the early stages and had a number of crosses intercepted or blocked just before the attackers could get their shots away.It was not all one-way traffic as Darwen started to play themselves into the game and were unlucky when a 25-yard effort cannoned off the base of the post with Will Kitchen well beaten.The keeper held another Darwen shot from a tight angle, while at the other end, Ric Coar sent an effort across the face of goal.The deadlock was eventually broken when Jonny Hothersall beat a number of players before finding Alan Coar.His first shot was blocked but he was … [Read more...] about Garstang 3 AFC Darwen 0: Brothers fire Riversiders to home victory
Trawden AC runners were in action in a number of events over another busy weekend. The action started on Friday night with the Mr Sparkles Dark Un - a five-mile night fell race organised by Darwen Dashers.Gavin O’Connor was the first of the Trawden runners home, followed by Dawn Tibbs, Paul Marsden and Allan Boult.The following day almost 80 Trawden runners were in action in parkruns.Sam Cudworth, at Paradise Point in Australia, was the furthest from home, the majority ran either Pendle or Burnley and Jo Perry celebrated being first lady home at the event in Pwllheli.Sunday’s events saw Dale Grimshaw win the Southampton Run For Chocolate 10k and Dave Lord was second V55 in the Great North West Half Marathon in Blackpool - an event which also saw strong finishes from Jonny Russell, Mark Fawcett, Joe Edmundson and Ian Barton.A large contingent headed to Harewood House for the British Heart Foundation 10k trail race but the main focus of attention on Sunday was the new … [Read more...] about Trawden runners sparkle in the dark in Darwen
A superb performance in difficult conditions saw Longridge Town win 6-2 at AFC Darwen on Saturday. The data, from the DVLA, showed motorists from Blaby in Leicestershire were the worst offenders, with 39 per cent slapped with points for speeding, jumping red lights, and other traffic sins.Ashfield in Nottingham was the best, with a statistical 0.0 per cent of drivers punished.Fylde in Lancashire made the top 10 worst list - coming in ninth with 7.3 per cent, while Blackburn with Darwen in East Lancashire came seventh in the top 10 list of authority areas with the best drivers, with just 1.5 per cent of drivers with points to their name.1.
