Gerhard Richter’s landscape paintings shown at the Kunstforum Vienna
Landscapes have always fascinated Gerhard Richter in his work. No other motif appears to have enthralled the artist quite as much throughout his career. Born in Dresden in 1932, he has drawn inspiration for his landscape paintings from magazines or amateur photographs, using broad brush strokes to create mountain views in black and white and views of lakes full of subtle color. Together, these landscapes are all part of a panorama of landscapes that have long come to form a particular group of works in Richter's oeuvre. The Vienna Kunstforum museum now presents a retrospective of Richter's landscapes from October 1 through February 14, 2021. Much-improved Ireland hammer inaccurate Italy to kick-start Six Nations campaign
D eath, taxes and Italy drubbings. This result will do nothing to silence those who argue that Italy are undeserving of their protected Six Nations status. Franco Smith’s team were dreadful. That is now 139 points and 19 tries they have conceded in three games. But in terms of getting Ireland out of a rut this was useful enough exercise. Ireland had arrived in Rome with criticism of their attacking play ringing in their ears , boasting the fewest number of tries in the first two rounds of this year’s championship (two), the fewest linebreaks (eight) and joint-fewest offloads (six). They left feeling like the All Blacks. Six tries, another perfectly good one ignored by the TMO Romain Poite, plus two more which were chalked off in a ludicrously one-sided second half at the Stadio Olimpico, were just what the doctor ordered for Andy Farrell’s men. While Scotland and England will provide far sterner tests, Ireland’s confidence will be buoyed by some of the combinations and play … [Read more...] about Much-improved Ireland hammer inaccurate Italy to kick-start Six Nations campaign
‘Culture of misogyny’ could mean men get more lenient sentences – commissioners warn
A "culture of misogyny in the criminal justice system" could lead to men getting away with more lenient sentences, the victims' commissioner and domestic abuse commissioner for England and Wales have said. In a joint letter to Home Secretary Priti Patel, Lord Chancellor Robert Buckland and Attorney General Michael Ellis, the commissioners have called for an independent review for every domestic homicide. They are also urging the government to review murder and manslaughter sentences in domestic abuse cases. In the letter, Domestic Abuse Commissioner Nicole Jacobs and Victims' Commissioner Dame Vera Baird QC call for "greater recognition of the devastation caused by domestic homicide" and a "programme of work to address deficiencies across the criminal justice system and statutory services". They write: "We have seen the effects of a culture of misogyny throughout the criminal justice system, to the detriment of women across England and Wales.
