Almost half a million pound in council savings has been forked out so that Poundland can continue to pay a controversial £1 rent on a shop in Nuneaton town centre. For another year, Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has had to use £217,000 of its reserves to make up for the £1 rent deal it struck with the national chain to use its building in Queens Road. This is added to the £248,950 already spent on the agreement to keep the store in the shop. THE Royal Mint has launched a new series of Paddington Bear 50p coins after a college student found an unreleased one in her change at the shops and flogged it on eBay for £16,000. The seller - Jordan Mcilquham - found the leaked coin in her change after a "quick shop" in Caerphilly, south Wales last week. Yesterday, the coin - which The Royal Mint confirmed is genuine - sold for £16,000 after it was spotted by collectors on the auction website. Amazingly, the details of the new coins had not yet been released by the Royal Mint, which is based just under 10 miles down the road in Llantrisant. It is believed to have been accidentally pocketed by someone at the Royal Mint, before being spent at a local shop, according to This is Money. The Royal Mint launched its new 12-sided £1 coin last year and Brits were given until October 15 to use up the old versions of the coins before they became void. In a new 'Scarcity Index', CoinChecker has identified 24 of the rarest £1 coins to have ever circulated the UK - with some worth as much as £50 each. Three members of a Merseyside drug gang who raked in more than £41,000 from criminal activity have been ordered to pay back just £1 apiece. Stephen Welsh, 32; James Inglesby, 30, and 24-year-old Sean Till were jailed for a total of almost 12 years last September. Carlisle Crown Court heard how they used an addict’s home in Kendal, Cumbria, as a base from which to peddle class A cocaine and heroin. Welsh was said to have played the role of branch manager and operated a hub phone from which messages were despatched alerting users to illegal substances being sold. All were rounded up by cops and later admitted conspiring to supply the two drugs in South Cumbria during a 17-day period. Welsh, of Ackers Hall Avenue, West Derby, was jailed for five years and three months, while homeless Till, and Inglesby, of Clorraine Road, Kirkby each received 40-month terms.
