Northern Ireland’s second-biggest political party on Friday blocked the formation of a working legislature in Belfast, and said it would keep up the boycott until the UK government tears up post-Brexit trade rules it accuses of destabilizing the region. The Democratic Unionist Party's move deepens Northern Ireland's political deadlock, which is fueling a UK-EU feud that could balloon into a trade war between Britain and the 27-nation European Union. The DUP came second in a Northern Ireland Assembly election last week that saw Irish nationalist party Sinn Fein win the most seats -- the first time a party that seeks union with the Republic of Ireland has won an election in the bastion of Protestant power. Under Northern Ireland’s mandatory power-sharing rules, that gives Sinn Fein the post of first minister, with the DUP taking the deputy first minister job. A government can’t be formed unless both roles are filled, and the DUP says it won’t take part unless border … [Read more...] about Unionists block new Northern Ireland government over Brexit trade rules

DAILY MAIL COMMENT: WFH won’t ease the punishing price spike
If the Bank of England ’s governor, with every bit of financial information at his fingertips, has no answer to the inflation monster, it begs the question: What is the point of him? After all, Andrew Bailey ’s core objective is to keep prices in check. To admit feeling ‘helpless’ in the face of rocketing costs is not only absurd, but deeply irresponsible. Confidence in the economy is already slipping. The last thing Britain needs is for the man overseeing monetary policy to be sending out distress signals. And what kind of message does it send out when he allows staff to spend FOUR whole days a week working from home? Andrew Bailey’s core objective is to keep prices in check. To admit feeling ‘helpless’ in the face of rocketing costs is not only absurd, but deeply irresponsible Perhaps that’s why Mr Bailey feels so impotent. In the midst of the most terrifying price spike for a generation, his officials stubbornly refuse to return to their desks. How will … [Read more...] about DAILY MAIL COMMENT: WFH won’t ease the punishing price spike
Wednesday morning news briefing: UK’s retort to EU trade war threat
Liz Truss has insisted that the UK "will not shy away" from taking action on the Northern Ireland Protocol. The Foreign Secretary last night told Brussels its proposed solutions would make the situation worse after EU leaders threatened a trade war . She is preparing to announce that the UK will unilaterally change parts of the protocol – which defines post-Brexit trading terms between mainland Britain and Northern Ireland – as early as next week. Ministers are expected to point to the impasse over power-sharing in Northern Ireland in the wake of last week's elections as proof that the protocol is unsustainable. There were warnings from the Continent about potential economic consequences if the UK reneges on promises it made in the 2019 Brexit withdrawal agreement. But, as political editor Ben Riley-Smith reports, Ms Truss issued a retort . Meanwhile, Boris Johnson used yesterday's Queen's Speech to say that helping families with the cost of living crunch and … [Read more...] about Wednesday morning news briefing: UK’s retort to EU trade war threat
UK has ‘absolutely the right’ to change Northern Ireland post-Brexit trade rules, says business secretary
The UK government has "absolutely the right" to tear up parts of post-Brexit trading arrangements in Northern Ireland, Kwasi Kwarteng has insisted. Speaking to Sky News's Sophy Ridge On Sunday programme, the business secretary also accused Brussels of being "unreasonable" in its approach towards renegotiating the Northern Ireland Protocol. But Ireland's foreign minister Simon Coveney said "sabre rattling" and "grandstanding" at Westminster was not how issues would be resolved and the UK making changes unilaterally would be a breach of international law. Politics Hub: 'Last thing' EU and Ireland want is tension with UK, Irish foreign minister says He pointed out his country was also "frustrated" dealing with the fallout of Brexit , which he said had cost it hundreds of millions of euros and threatened the peace process. DAILY MAIL COMMENT: Now the Prime Minister must meet challenges head on
Is Boris Johnson a very lucky general? To face such abysmally weak Labour leaders as Jeremy Corbyn and Sir Keir Starmer , some say the gods have indeed smiled upon him. But the idea he’s had some celestial blessing is undermined by the extraordinary events of his premiership so far. Dominated by Brexit, Covid, the cost of living crunch and the Ukraine war, there has been little political room to do anything else. We are pleased he is braced for a battle royale over his popular policy of deporting illegal Channel migrants to Rwanda But in an interview with the Mail today, the Prime Minister is emphatic that he now has other targets in his sights. We are pleased he is braced for a battle royale over his popular policy of deporting illegal Channel migrants to Rwanda. Inhabitants of the liberal metropolitan bubble sneer at so-called unenlightened concerns about porous borders. But this is a core issue for millions who actually feel the impact of illicit … [Read more...] about DAILY MAIL COMMENT: Now the Prime Minister must meet challenges head on
GOP Targets Loophole Allegedly Allowing Abortion Providers To Profit From Sale Of Fetal Remains | The Daily Wire
New legislation introduced by Republican Florida Rep. Scott Franklin zeroes in on allegations that abortion providers are profiting from the sale of fetal remains. The Prohibiting Abortion Industry’s Lucrative Loopholes Act, first obtained by The Daily Wire, prohibits payments, reimbursements, gifts, or compensation of fetal tissue by closing the “valuable consideration” loophole in current law and punishing violators with fines or up to ten years in prison. “Abortion providers should never be allowed to profit off the death of innocent victims,” Franklin told The Daily Wire. “The fact that they can exploit a loophole in the law to do so is a terrible congressional oversight that should have been addressed years ago.” Though Congress outlawed the for-profit sale of fetal remains in 1993, organizations like the Planned Parenthood Federation of America have publicly acknowledged payments for fetal tissue but explain them away by claiming they were only reimbursed for costs. … [Read more...] about GOP Targets Loophole Allegedly Allowing Abortion Providers To Profit From Sale Of Fetal Remains | The Daily Wire
‘Rail network has hit the buffers as money dries up – and Tories can’t fix it’
If you want to catch a train from Salford Central, you’d better pump up your leg muscles. The carriages are so far from the platform “you have to jump aboard!” says Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham . Mind the gap... the one between Great British Railways promised in the Queen’s Speech Transport Bill and the reality. There is no new money to fix the creaking system, except for vanity projects like HS2 and to pay redundancy to the thousands of rail workers the Tories want rid of. Mayor Burnham was speaking in support of the Invest in Rail campaign from train drivers’ union Aslef , aimed at halting the cash starvation. By heaven, is it needed. Great British Railways is a confidence trick. It isn’t renationalisation, it’s a government gauleiter dishing out contracts to private operators. How Angela Rayner became a force to be reckoned with
When she appeared on the Matt Forde podcast in January, the most interesting thing Angela Rayner said wasn’t about the length of her skirt or the crossing and uncrossing of her legs in the House of Commons. Although she did banter with the Left-wing comedian about “the meme about Sharon Stone” that had been doing the rounds, the most telling part of the interview came at the beginning when she was announced as “the most powerful woman in the Labour Party”. Striding onto the stage at the Duchess Theatre in Covent Garden, where the podcasts are recorded in front of an audience, she joked: “I said he had to introduce me like that or I wouldn’t come on.” Like everything the 42-year-old deputy Labour leader says in jest, there appeared to be an element of truth to it. Later revealing how, “God, yeah”, she’d love to be prime minister one day, it is perhaps little wonder that this teenage mother turned political powerhouse is fast emerging as one of the Opposition’s best hopes of … [Read more...] about How Angela Rayner became a force to be reckoned with
