THIS coming weekend could be one of the most pivotal in the remainder of the Premier League season. There's a packed schedule of action ahead, with the potential title showdown between Liverpool and Man City on Sunday - while Manchester United welcome Brighton. Man Utd vs Brighton - Sunday, 2pm JUST when you think they've turned the corner, Ole's men are back at square one. A terrific 2-1 Carabao Cup win at Chelsea looked to have finally stuttered Man Utd's season into life on a cold, dank evening in West London. But fast forward four days to Bournemouth and the Red Devils were lifeless in a 1-0 surrender to Eddie Howe's hard-working Cherries. We got fully behind Bournemouth in last week's preview and reckoned that United would do well to come back from the South Coast with a point. They couldn't even do that. It's a really ugly situation now at Old Trafford and it says a lot that they come into this November game two points BEHIND Brighton in the league table. That's definitely not a … [Read more...] about Football betting tips TODAY: Liverpool’s Mane to dive in City victory and Rashford to score for Man Utd

"What's the longest unbeaten run of any club against their city (or otherwise local) rivals in official matches?" wondered Adrian Rogstad, after gloating that his team, Lyn, recently celebrated 10,000 days since last losing to their Oslo city rivals Vålerenga. "Granted, we were not in the same division between 1981 and 2002, but since that season there's been 14 Oslo derbies in the league, Lyn winning 10 and four ending in draws." If we discount Bradford City, who haven't lost a derby since the late 1960s owing to the liquidation of their nominal rivals Bradford Park Avenue in 1974, Calum White's warble from Edinburgh might take it: "It's magic, you know, 22 games in a row!" That, apparently, was "the song sung by Hearts fans at Edinburgh derbies in the early 1990s" and Calum's right: Hearts were unbeaten against their city rivals Hibernian for 22 games during that period, starting with a 1-0 victory at Tynecastle at the start of the 1989-90 season and not ending until August … [Read more...] about Unbeaten runs between city rivals
1. Oldham, Premier League, 1992-93 It's one thing to overturn an eight-point gap to avoid relegation; quite another to do so in the final week of the season. Joe Royle's Oldham had to win three games in seven days and hope either Crystal Palace or Sheffield United made a horlicks of their last two fixtures. The problem was that the first of those three games was away to Aston Villa, who had to win to keep their title challenge alive. On the face of it they had no chance, but Oldham handled the end-of-season pressure/need equation better than Villa and a goal from Nick Henry (no relation) put the cat among the pigeons. The problem was that, because Henry's goal gave Manchester United their first title for 26 years, its real significance was lost, like an insight during an orgasm. Indeed, Palace's Geoff Thomas would later tell this rag that the relegation battle crept up on them from nowhere. When a resurgent Sheffield United did the necessary at Everton on the Tuesday, the survival … [Read more...] about The Joy of Six: great escapes
"Following on from your old football-inspired albums question, Iron Maiden's Somewhere in Time has reference to West Ham beating Arsenal 7-3 on the album cover," begins Paul Baker. "Barring the SFA using the iconic Robin Friday at Cardiff image, the Wedding Present's George Best at Manchester United one and Mogwai's Zidane soundtrack (Real Madrid), have any other football teams been referenced on CD album covers?" A fine question, Paul, and one that has brought the most comprehensive and least digressive answer from Paul White. We don't know if our correspondent has been riffling through the album racks in Noord-Holland, but he's uncovered a gem with this. The artistic collaboration between FC Volendam and Radio Veronica resulted in this love child in 1973, the same year that "The Other Orange" became the first Eerste Divisie side to tie up a sponsorship deal – with the offshore pirate radio station Veronica. They put a large V on their shirts that season, claiming to get around … [Read more...] about Which football teams have been referenced on album covers?
FRANK LAMPARD has confirmed that he is hoping to recruit attacking reinforcements next month and finally replace Eden Hazard. Chelsea were unable to replace their star man this summer after he left for Real Madrid because of their transfer ban, but that has since been lifted. The Blues are now set to have at least £150million to spend in January with Lampard reportedly identifying five potential targets. A striker remains the former Derby manager's priority, with Olivier Giroud set to leave after falling down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge. The Guardian report that Lyon’s Moussa Dembéle and RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner are among the options on Lampard's shortlist. He has also said to have been keeping tabs on Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho and Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha. While SunSport revealed in October that Bournemouth frontman Callum Wilson was on Chelsea's radar along with Werner as the club were confident of their ban being lifted.
