0 Have your say FRIDAY NIGHT’S Ladbrokes Challenge Cup quarter-final threatened to be a difficult tie for Leeds Rhinos and was, for eight minutes. At that stage they trailed Leigh Centurions 6-0, but the Betfred Championship side had full-back Peter Mata’utia sent-off for a horrible tackle on Matt Parcell and from then on it was no contest.By half-time Leeds were 40-12 in front and they cruised through what was – in comparison – a dull second period.Leigh refused to throw in the towel after trailing 48-12 on the hour and a couple of tries in the final quarter made the scoreline relatively respectable. But even so Rhinos won the second operiod 12-10 and were full value for the 52-22 final score.Leeds weren’t very good in the second half, but the job was done by then and they were down to one available substitute so it was understandable. The tie finished 12 men against 10. Rhinos’ Brett Ferres and opponent Jamie Acton were sin-binned seven … [Read more...] about Leeds Rhinos 52 Leigh Centurions 22: Rhinos hit cruise control in Challenge Cup formality
IT was the win that shook the Baftas, leaving telly luvvies with their jaws by their feet. And for Jane McDonald, the down-to-earth singer from Wakefield, the award was made all the sweeter as she saw off stuffy BBC stalwart Antiques Roadshow. Even Sir David Attenborough had to rely on a public vote to land a prize at last month’s controversial ceremony after being snubbed by industry bigwigs. So how did Jane do it? She reckons her no-nonsense approach to life — not to mention her big hair, fabulous make-up and high heels — might have helped. In her first chat since the night her Channel 5 series Cruising with Jane McDonald won best feature, she tells The Sun: “The older you get, you don’t care as much and also you realise that you need to enjoy your life a bit more.” Jane, who shot to fame back in 1998 after featuring on BBC fly-on-the-wall series The Cruise, continued: “When all this happened to me 20 years ago, I was frightened of … [Read more...] about How Cruising star Jane McDonald went from being frightened of everything to beat snobs with her shock Bafta win
On a recent four-night cruise to the Bahamas on the 2,758-passenger Carnival Victory, a lively crowd was downing neon drinks at an equally fluorescent bar in the ship’s multi-story atrium. The casino was packed and smoky. This was old-school cruising, and everyone was loving it.Most ships have an official lifespan of 30 years, the amount of time it takes for the asset to depreciate to 15 percent of its original book value. By that measure, the 18-year-old Carnival Victory has passed the theoretical prime of her life. She’s still quite the moneymaker. By focusing on short, three- and four-night sailings from Miami to the Bahamas and back, the aesthetically outdated ship carries twice as many passengers per year as many similarly sized vessels. In fact, the Carnival Victory is just one of the many middle-aged and elderly ships that were built during a cruise boom in the 1990s but now make up a multibillion-dollar portion of the cruise … [Read more...] about Where Do Old Cruise Ships Go to Die?
Norwegian Cruise Line celebrated a milestone moment this week as it officially welcomed newest ship Norwegian Bliss into its fleet. The 168,000 gross-ton ship was christened in Seattle, Washington, marking the debut of her inaugural season with cruises to Alaska. Norwegian Bliss, which boasts a capacity of 4,004, also made history as the largest ship to be christened in the city; just a few weeks after becoming the largest passenger ship to transit the Panama Canal . Her honorary godfather Elvis Duran led the ceremony which took place on board the ship itself, in the 900-seat Bliss Theater. After the traditional blessings, Elvis officially christened Norwegian Bliss with the symbolic bottle break across the ship’s hull, wishing a safe voyage to all guests and crew wherever in the world she may travel. TOM Cruise has been spotted cruising around an air strip on a motorbike as filming of the Top Gun sequel gets under way. The 55-year-old action hero – who famously performs his own stunts – looked confident as he hopped on to the bike and zipped up and down a military base. Earlier this week, Tom revealed that the long awaited sequel to the 1986 original is now finally being filmed. He took to social media to show himself posing for the first official promotional photo. The image showed Tom as his iconic character Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, dressed in his pilots jumpsuit and clutching his helmet in his hand. The image also showed a fighter jet – an F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. Details of the sequel – titled Top Gun: Maverick – have been kept tightly guarded, although it is expected Tom’s character will be seen training fighter pilots. Drone warfare is also expected to be included in the plot – however the airfield motorbike scenes would suggest the … [Read more...] about Tom Cruise rides a motorbike in new pics from Top Gun: Maverick set as filming on the sequel begin
