Zaporizhzhia: Worker wounded in new Russian shelling at nuclear plant, says Ukraine
Ukraine's state nuclear power company said on Sunday that a worker was wounded when Russian forces again shelled the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant on Saturday evening. Radiation monitoring sensors were also damaged, Energoatom said. Rocket attacks struck the site of the plant's dry storage facility, where 174 containers with spent nuclear fuel are stored in the open air, the company said on the Telegram messaging app. The Zaporizhzhia plant was captured by Russian forces in the opening stage of the war but is still run by Ukrainian technicians. The plant was also shelled on Friday, and Russia again blamed Ukraine for the fresh incident. The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) raised grave concerns on Saturday about shelling the previous day at Zaporizhzhia, the biggest nuclear power plant in Europe, and warned of potential "nuclear disaster". "I’m extremely concerned by the shelling yesterday at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, which … [Read more...] about Zaporizhzhia: Worker wounded in new Russian shelling at nuclear plant, says Ukraine

Taiwan military aircraft and ships sent to ‘appropriately’ react to China’s army drills
Taiwan's defence ministry revealed it sent aircraft and ships to "appropriately" react to Chinese training drills on Sunday morning, August 7. China had been carrying out military training drills around Taiwan for three full days, sparking tension between the two nations. Some Chinese ships and planes crossed the unofficial border between the two countries over the weekend, Taiwan claimed. Taiwan premier Su Tseng-chang urged China to not flex its muscles, while accusing it of using the exercises to "arrogantly" disrupt stability in the region. The defence ministry also said that the Chinese military training drills were a simulated attack on Taiwan. If a Child Is Jailed and No One Is There to Hear Him Cry
For months at a time, the detention of migrant children seems to fall off the national radar, somehow fading to the background, behind the daily dramas of scandals big and small. And then suddenly, news will erupt: The children don’t have soap. They are freezing. The food is rotten. Where this information comes from is not primarily from journalists but monitors—lawyers and advocates who regularly visit the nation’s detention facilities and border-patrol facilities to document the conditions. They do so not because these sites request the monitoring, but because that monitoring is allowed by what’s known as the Flores settlement, a 22-year-old consent decree that governs the care of migrant children in custody. But with new rules that the Trump administration is expected to publish this week, even that single, infrequent geyser of information could go away. As part of a sweeping proposal to scrap the Flores regulations—including a change that would enable the Trump administration … [Read more...] about If a Child Is Jailed and No One Is There to Hear Him Cry

Almost half of EU countries still suffering from drought
Almost half of European Union land is currently under a drought warning or more severe "alert" level, hampering agriculture, energy production and water supply, the European Commission has confirmed. From France in the east and Romania in the west, to western Germany and southern Greece, a "wide and persistent" lack of rain, combined with heatwaves, makes for an alarmingly long list of countries where drought is getting worse. New data from the European Drought Observatory (EDO) shows some 45% of the bloc's territory under "warning" conditions, the second of three drought categories, during the ten days leading to 20 July. Meanwhile, 15% of land has moved into the most severe "alert" state, meaning not only is land drying out after low rain, but plants and crops are impaired too. The figures show little improvement from the previous ten-day period, which saw 46% of land at "warning" level with dried out soil, and 13% in "alert" territory. Prestatyn girl makes homeless blankets from crisp packets
Published 4 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A 12-year-old girl has made hundreds of survival blankets for homeless people out of crisp packets. Alyssa, from Prestatyn, Denbighshire, flattens them out, cleans them and uses an iron to fuse them together into a single sheet. During the past year, she has made more than 200 blankets using almost 10,000 waste crisp packets. The blankets have been given to organisations which support homeless people in Llandudno, Wrexham and Rhyl. Each one takes an hour to make, but Alyssa said the effort was worth it because it helps homeless people and stops the crisp packets from being thrown in the bin. "The bit I don't like is washing them," she said. 1,700 children in temporary housing in Wales Street homelessness at 'crisis point', says Shelter Cymru Vow to build 1,000 homes in Wales amid backlog … [Read more...] about Prestatyn girl makes homeless blankets from crisp packets
