‘Summer sale’ for Channel migrants fuels record crossings

August 8, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

A “summer sale” for Channel migrants is fuelling a rise in crossings with people smugglers slashing prices by as much as £1,500 per person, it has emerged. Social media adverts, discovered on Monday by The Telegraph, saw the traffickers offering “bargain” prices and crossings on small boats that have “never been cheaper,” down from £5,000 to as little as £3,500 per migrant. The promotions were primarily targeted at Albanians who accounted for four in 10 of the nearly 3,000 migrants who crossed the Channel during a six-week period this summer. Border Force experts suggested the smugglers may be cutting prices to open up new markets like the Albanians previously unable to afford the charges. MPs on the home affairs committee have also claimed that gangs may be exploiting the court-enforced delay in deportations of illegal migrants to Rwanda to persuade them to make the crossing now before the flights start. The disclosures come as another estimated 300 Channel … [Read more...] about ‘Summer sale’ for Channel migrants fuels record crossings

Americans should not let the revelations about Donald Trump’s demands for a loyal military get lost in all the hysteria over the raid at Mar-a-Lago. But first, here are three new stories from The Atlantic . The Mar-a-Lago raid proves the U.S. isn’t a banana republic. Trump makes the Mar-a-Lago search a new loyalty test. The rivalry that defines America A Dangerous Gambit The FBI raided Donald Trump’s home in Florida, but we don’t know why. Early reports suggest a link to Trump’s alleged removal of classified material from the White House, but until we know more, there is no point in speculating on why the Justice Department has taken the remarkable step of searching the home of a former president. Republicans, of course, are now screaming that the FBI … [Read more...] about The President Who Wanted Nazi Generals

Sir Nick Clegg returns to London in latest Meta move

August 3, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Sir Nick Clegg is to join a string of senior Facebook executives moving to London after four years in Silicon Valley, despite predicting that an “economically insecure” Britain would hemorrhage tech businesses in the wake of Brexit. The former Liberal Democrat deputy prime minister, 55, who is president of global affairs at Facebook's parent company Meta, is to divide his time between homes in London and California after his return to Britain. Sir Nick – who left the UK to work for Facebook's billionaire founder Mark Zuckerberg after losing his seat as an MP – has made no secret of his longing to leave California, saying last year that his "heart belongs massively 5,000 miles away". However, the decision is nonetheless likely to raise eyebrows given his history of outspoken warnings about the damage that Brexit would do to UK plc – particularly in the industry in which he is now employed. In a 2017 interview, he said: "Pretty much everyone I speak to in the tech sector … [Read more...] about Sir Nick Clegg returns to London in latest Meta move

California is no Garden of Eden. It is now a woke basketcase whose rich and poor are fleeing alike

August 7, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

That Nick Clegg has become the latest Facebook executive to announce he’s fleeing Silicon Valley for Blighty , where he will spend half his time, says a lot about California. Britain is on the brink of a deep and protracted recession, with inflation set to rise to 13 per cent. Formerly thriving people will struggle to feed their families, heat their houses or go anywhere, since the railways are riddled with massive strikes and airports are chaos. We are lazy: even now, there is an acute labour shortage as people prefer not to work. And we are angry: GP surgeries, call centre staff and shopworkers have all reported a surge in abusive behaviour. Even so, basketcase Britain seems to be preferable to California. It’s not just Clegg: Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, owned by Facebook parent group Meta, and the firm’s chief marketing officer Alex Schultz, have also chosen to relocate to Britain. Clegg, who six months ago was promoted to head of global affairs at Meta, in charge of … [Read more...] about California is no Garden of Eden. "Are you videoing us?" the partner asks. "No, the rides," she answers. The woman's partner then points at her and says with a smile on his face, "No, he's just f***ing said it, don't honestly." I’m 21 and already having to think about having kids because of my endometriosis

August 6, 2022 by metro.co.uk

Just like clockwork, I’m back in the hospital waiting room. My leg bounces as I wait for my name to be called, hoping that this month’s consultation will have better news than the last. But it never does. ‘Maybe next month!’ my nurse will tell me – knowing there’s nothing she can say that will actually ease my frustration at an ever-growing waiting list for surgery. I lift up my sleeve, ready for my monthly dose of Prostap – a drug that keeps my body in a menopausal state. I clench my fist in preparation for the pain, but the injection will never hurt as much as the sound of newborns crying from down the hall. The thing is, I have chronic pain, bladder issues, and as a result of my endometriosis, I’m in a chemical menopause. After being diagnosed with endometriosis in 2019, at 19, almost seven years after my nauseating pain, heavy periods and painful sex began, I initially felt hopeful. I knew why I was in so much pain, and was optimistic that my condition would … [Read more...] about I’m 21 and already having to think about having kids because of my endometriosis
