Police watchdog orders forces to explain why black and ethnic minorities are subjected to more stop and searches

· February 26, 2021 ·

THE POLICE watchdog has ordered forces to explain why black and ethnic minorities are subjected to more stop and searches than whites. Police were also urged to consider scrapping stops for possession of drugs because they are said to contribute to the racial disparity. A report from Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS) said the disproportionate use of police powers risks losing trust of communities. The watchdog highlighted the death of George Floyd in the US as an example of the potential fall-out when police interaction with ethnic minorities goes wrong. Black people are almost nine times more likely to be stopped and searched than whites, according to latest Home Office data for 2019/20. They are also over 5.5 times more likely to have force used on them by cops than white people, have eight times more chance of being handcuffed and a nine-fold prospect of having a Taser drawn on them. ENGLAND legend Paul Gascoigne has been showing off his dance moves ahead of being dropped into the jungle with a former Miss Italy stunner. Gazza, 53, is set to make an appearance on the Italian version of ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here.’ And he worked up a sweat during an unorthodox dance show in pyjamas, slippers and shades as he got ready to board a plane to Central America to star with a former Miss Italy in Isola de Famosi - Island of the Famous. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday announced a new deal with the US pharmaceutical giant Moderna to supply extra vaccine doses. The European Union has faced criticism for its vaccine purchasing strategy , amid concern that the vaccine rollout in member states has been relatively slow. The contract for the Moderna vaccine — which was approved in January — is the second the EU has struck with the manufacturer and provides for an extra purchase of 150 million in 2021. There is then the option to buy an additional 150 million in 2022 on behalf of all 27 EU member states.
