Manchester United  On the night of March 11 1941 the Luftwaffe raid on Trafford Park, following up its devastating attack on the city and the Metropolitan-Vickers aircraft factory three months earlier, struck Old Trafford for the second time, demolishing the stands and destroying the pitch. The War Damage Commission released funds to repair the stadium only in 1948 so for the first three years of post-war football, Manchester United played their home games at Maine Road. They were Division One runners-up in each of their three seasons in Moss Side and won the FA Cup in 1947-48. United hold the record for attracting the highest ever attendance for a league match to Maine Road when 83,260 people watched them take on Arsenal (the eventual title winners) in January 1948.
