The coronavirus jab’s most tantalising side effects? It may help fight cancer, chronic pain… and even Alzheimer’s
Joan Wakefield has barely been able to walk for the best part of six months. The 72-year-old from Stockport had a knee replacement in October and has since suffered infections in the scar tissue, causing agonising pain. Then at the beginning of this month she received the first dose of AstraZeneca 's Covid-19 vaccine. 'I woke up the next morning and the leg pain and stiffness was gone,' she says. 'I couldn't believe it. I joked with my partner about whether the vaccine had anything to do with it. Previously, I couldn't even bend my leg. Now I can extend it fully, and even put my shoes and socks on. I'm optimistic I'll be able to return to work sooner, rather than later, now.' It seems ludicrous – a vaccine designed to protect against one virus can, somehow, improve other totally unrelated elements of health. But Joan Wakefield is far from alone. A man receives his Covid-19 vaccinations at Lichfield Cathedral, Staffordshire earlier this week RELATED … [Read more...] about The coronavirus jab’s most tantalising side effects? Nicola Sturgeon must quit if just half of the claims against her are true, says top Tory
NICOLA Sturgeon must quit if just half of the claims against her are true, a top Tory has said. The Scottish First Minister’s position will be untenable if accusations by predecessor Alex Salmond are proven, according to Tory MSP Murdo Fraser. He told the BBC: “I’ve been a member of the Scottish Parliament for almost 20 years and this was the most extraordinary event I can recall. “If even half of what he alleged turns out to be true — and we will get to the bottom of this very soon — then Nicola Sturgeon ’s position is untenable and she will have to resign.” Mr Salmond says she misled Parliament and breached the ministerial code over harassment claims against him. He also accused her husband, SNP chief executive Peter Murrell, of a plot to drum up police complaints against him to get him jailed. 2021 Berlinale will focus on industry first, then fans
The Berlinale has a certain number of established rituals. Braving the normally bitter end-of-February weather — when the international film festival usually takes place — there's always a crowd of die-hard autograph collectors flocking at the corner of the street where actors and filmmakers are dropped off from limousines ahead of their movie's press conference. And before the premiere of a film, fans spend hours waiting to see their favorite stars walk up the red carpet, hoping to get a selfie or simply to soak up the exciting atmosphere of the festival , even if it's freezing outside. Meanwhile, journalists usually run around from one press screening to the other, scrambling to fit in press conferences and interviews into their packed schedule, all while quickly filing stories on deadline. All that won't be happening this year — at least not during the part of the festival kicking off next week. The winner of the Golden Bear will be announced at the end of the week but … [Read more...] about 2021 Berlinale will focus on industry first, then fans
