SCHOOLS won't have to enforce face masks or carry out regular testing on pupils, it was revealed today. Speaking to Good Morning Britain this morning, education minister Nick Gibb said twice-weekly testing will not be compulsory for pupils to go to school in England but remains “highly recommended”. With pupils returning to schools in March 8, Gibb confirmed a "no test, no school" policy is not in place but said he hopes the majority of students will volunteer to test themselves at home twice a week before coming in to school. "No, they’re not compulsory but we highly recommend it, it’s everybody doing everything we can to identify asymptomatic cases of Covid , helping to reduce the transmission," he said. "The first three tests will be taken in the school that will show the students how to do it most effectively and it’s the students themselves that will do it at home with supervision by their parents," he added. EU coronavirus summit: Vaccine certificates expected by summer
Leaders from the European Union's (EU) 27-member states came to together for a virtual summit on Thursday with the aim of solving pressing coronavirus-related health and logistical problems confronting the bloc. Member state politicians used the meeting to discuss approaches to speeding up the delivery of vaccines, the implementation and use of vaccine passports and the potential for conflict arising from national border closings. Perhaps the most important short-term announcement to emerge from the meeting was that of "convergence" around the concept of a vaccine passport. COVID-19: More surge testing in Ealing as additional South Africa variant cases detected
More surge testing will be rolled out in Ealing after additional cases of the coronavirus variant first identified in South Africa were detected. It is an extension of testing which was started in the west London borough earlier this month following the discovery of previous cases. Cases have been identified in Acton, Greenford, Southall and West Ealing and are not believed to be linked to international travel. Simon Cowell has said breaking his back "wasn't that bad" and that he has fully recovered following his accident last year. The reality TV judge was injured when he fell off an electric bike outside his home in Malibu , California, in August. His treatment involved six hours of surgery, which included the insertion of a metal rod into his back, and doctors reportedly said he had been lucky. After missing Britain's Got Talent last year and much of America's Got Talent, Cowell , 61, is now preparing to make his return in the US. Speaking to weekly US entertainment magazine People, he said: "I've got to be honest with you, it wasn't that bad actually, breaking your back.
