The UK has reported another 290 coronavirus deaths and 7,434 new cases, while 19.6 million people have now had their first vaccine dose. This compares to the 345 deaths and 8,523 cases recorded on Friday. Another 504,493 had their first dose of the COVID-19 yesterday, bringing the total to 19,682,048. The total number of people who have died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavrus in the UK now stands at 122,705. The UK government has set the target of offering a first coronavirus vaccine to all adults in the UK by the end of the July. UK coronavirus hospital deaths rise by 293 as Saturday decline continues
Coronavirus hospital deaths in Britain have increased by 293, statistics show - as a week-on-week Saturday decline continues. A further 257 patients have died in England, 18 in Scotland, 16 in Wales and two in Northern Ireland. The daily figure is lower by 62 than the number of people who died in hospital a week ago, which totalled 355, and lower by 220 than the Saturday before - 513 on February 13. It is also a significant drop from a Saturday around a month ago, when 825 people died on January 23. Hospital deaths rose by 352 yesterday, according to official numbers. Got a story? Shoppers are paying up to 180 per cent more for vegan food than for the equivalent meat-based product, research has found. Four in five vegan goods cost more than their meat versions, according to a study commissioned by sports insurance brand Insure4Sport. It was noted that Marks & Spencer's £2.25 Plant Kitchen 'No Pork' sausage rolls were £1.45 more expensive than their 80p meat alternative - both of which weighed 120g. Meanwhile, Waitrose's £3.75 Vegan Chilli with Soya Mince and Rice, which weighs 400g, costs £1 more than its 450g meat counterpart. Many ingredients in the vegan products are more affordable, but the price can be driven up by development methods such as blending stages and heat processing. Over 850 cows on pariah ship in Mediterranean facing slaughter after bluetongue fears
More than 850 cows that have spent two months at sea on a ship crossing the Mediterranean are facing slaughter, following a report from Spanish vets. The cattle have suffered "hellish" conditions, according to animal rights activists. The Karim Allah vessel originally left the Spanish port of Cartagena to deliver the cattle to Turkey but were refused entry due to fears over bluetongue. The insect-borne bovine virus causes lameness and haemorrhaging among cattle but does not affect humans. After being turned away from Turkey , owners failed to find a new buyer for the animals. Advertisement The ship was subsequently rejected by several more countries, even to replenish animal feed, leaving the animals to go several days with just water. The ship was turned into a pariah vessel and it has now returned to its starting point in Cartagena.
