The Wieshan volcano, which sits in northeast China , was considered extinct – until now. Scientists believe the volcano that last erupted over 500,000 years ago may be 'recharging' after discovering two huge magma chambers beneath the surface. Wieshan is part of the Wudalianchi volcanic field that stretches 193 square miles and consist of 14 cinder cones surrounded by lava flows. The team captured a 3D image under Wieshan, allowing them to see chambers in the upper and middle crust filled with magma. Calculations show that 15 percent of the upper chamber is now occupied by molten rock –studies have suggested an area needs to be at 40 percent for the volcano to erupt. Air pollution from fossil fuels is TWICE as deadly as thought and is linked to 20 per cent of deaths worldwide, scientists warn
Air pollution created by the burning of fossil fuels like diesel and coal is responsible for one in five deaths globally every year, roughly 8.7million, new research reveals. Around 17 per cent of deaths in the UK, 99,000 people a year, are due to air pollution exposure, data from UCL and Harvard University shows. People living in industrialised areas and urban metropolises — such as South-East Asia, Eastern America and Europe — were exposed to the highest levels of pollution. The new research also shows half of all annual deaths linked to air pollution from fossil fuels occur in China and India. Previous studies have found high air pollution levels shortens lives by more than two years, on average. Worst-hit is Asia, where average lifespan is cut 4.1 years in China, 3.9 years in India, and 3.8 years in Pakistan. Scroll down for video Pictured, the number of premature deaths per grid square. The ‘new space race’: China and US lead the charge for Mars, with SpaceX and smaller nations fighting for the Moon and low Earth orbit
China and the US are in a race to Mars - with both nations due to land a rover on the Red Planet this month, and plans for future missions already in development. This new 'space race', unlike the battle to the Moon between the US and Soviet Union, is likely to be a much more crowded field, including private firms and smaller nations - such as the United Arab Emirates who have a probe en-route to Mars now. SpaceX founder Elon Musk reiterated in a recent interview that his aim is to land the first humans on Mars by 2026 - that is seven years earlier than NASA 's earliest goal. The US, China, Russia, Japan and the European Space Agency have loftier goals for exploring Mars - including missions to bring samples of Martian rock back to the Earth by the end of this decade - with humans landing on the planet by 2040. Before then, the first humans on Mars may fly there on the massive SpaceX Starship - currently in the testing phase - with a recent 'explosive' end to a recent … [Read more...] about The ‘new space race’: China and US lead the charge for Mars, with SpaceX and smaller nations fighting for the Moon and low Earth orbit
Earliest known conch shell horn plays a tune for the first time in 18,000 YEARS after new scientists discovered it was a wind instrument and not a ceremonial cup as originally thought
A shell discovered in a French cave almost 80 years ago has been revealed to be the earliest known conch shell horn. The shell, found in the Marsoulas Cave in the foothills of the French Pyrenees in 1931, has been played for the first time in 18,000 years after new analysis identified it as a wind instrument. Originally belonging to a large sea snail of the species Charonia lampas, the shell was at first thought to have been used as a ceremonial drinking cup. Now known as the Marsoulas conch shell, the priceless object is 12.2 inches (31 cm) in height, up to 7 inches (18 cm) in diameter and up to 0.3 inches (0.8 cm) thick. It's housed at the the Musée du quai Branly-Jacques Chirac in Paris, but it's only been reanalysed by French researchers due to a recent inventory. To confirm that this conch was used to produce sounds, scientists enlisted the help of a horn player, who managed to produce three sounds close to the notes C, C-sharp and D. Baby tyrannosaurs were only the size of a Border Collie dog when they took their first steps, 70 million-year-old jaw bone unearthed in Canada reveals
When baby tyrannosaurs were taking their first steps they were the 'size of a border collie dog' according to a new study of ancient 70 million year old fossils. Palaeontologists from the University of Edinburgh examined the fossilised remains of a tiny jaw bone and claw found in Canada - dating back millions of years. The remains belonged to a baby tyrannosaur – cousin of the fabled T-Rex – and are the first-known fossils of tyrannosaur embryos, according to the researchers. Through 3D scans they found the creature would have been about 3ft long when it first hatched - about the same size as a border collie dog - despite it growing to a mammoth 40ft long when it reached full adult size. An artist's illustration of a baby tyrannosaurus which were the size of Border Collie dog when taking first steps, a team of palaeontologists has discovered This is part of the fossilised remains of a baby tyrannosaur. Researchers say they underwent considerable skeletal … [Read more...] about Baby tyrannosaurs were only the size of a Border Collie dog when they took their first steps, 70 million-year-old jaw bone unearthed in Canada reveals
