A LUXURY hut maker has reported a 30 per cent rise in turnover as Brits create posh offices in their gardens. Plankbridge manufactures bespoke shepherd’s huts which have kitchens and showers along with a starting price of £22,500 - exporting them as far as the USA and Switzerland. They have seen enquiries soar by 70 per cent and turnover is up 30 per cent in 2020. Plankbridge, which was founded by Richard Lee and his partner Jane Dennison in 2000, is based at a 15,000sq/ft hangar near Dorchester, Dorset. COVID-19: British professor wins prestigious medal for leading team that created Oxford vaccine
A British vaccinologist has won the Royal Society for Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) Albert Medal for her work on the Oxford vaccine, recognising her contribution to "a global common good". Sarah Gilbert, who is a professor of vaccinology in the Nuffield Department of Medicine at Oxford University, said it was a "great honour" to receive the award for leading the Oxford vaccine team. She said: "The creation and the development of the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine came after I had worked in this field for many years, learning how to move quickly from a concept to a licensed vaccine, which involves numerous steps along the way. "With a great team at Oxford, we developed a 'vaccine for the world' which is now being used to save lives in many countries; our goal from the very beginning." Previous winners of the award include Winston Churchill, Marie Curie, Alexander Graham Bell, Stephen Hawking and Tim Berners-Lee. Amazon changes its new smartphone app logo after shoppers say it reminds them of a smirking Adolf Hitler
Amazon has changed the new logo of its smartphone app after users said the initial version reminded them of a smirking Adolf Hitler. The sales giant recently ditched its old logo, featuring the familiar symbol of a shopping cart, in favour of a brown Amazon box with a piece of tape with a jagged edge at the top. But combined with the smile-shaped arrow which also forms part of Amazon's branding, the tape looked like it could be part of a face - with what some shoppers thought was an uncomfortable resemblance to the dictator's distinctive moustache. The logo has since been changed again, with the tape now folded over in one corner and straight around the edges rather than jagged. Unlikely comparison: Amazon's first attempt at a new logo for its smartphone app (left) led some surprised shoppers to compare the image to Adolf Hitler (right) One user noticed the dubious logo on Sunday, saying: 'Well it happened.. my Amazon app icon finally updated to the … [Read more...] about Amazon changes its new smartphone app logo after shoppers say it reminds them of a smirking Adolf Hitler
Co-op Group faces crunch board meeting over £80m state funding repayment
The Co-op Group, Britain's biggest mutual, is to hold a crunch board meeting next week amid pressure to follow rival supermarkets' example and repay £80m of state funding handed to it during the pandemic. Sky News has learnt that directors of the groceries-to-funeralcare provider - headed by chairman Allan Leighton - will meet next Tuesday to debate whether to repay the funding it received in the form of business rates relief and furlough payments. People close to the situation said the Co-op's boardroom had seen "robust dialogue" over the issue, with some directors keen to repay the funding in full. Although the board is not yet technically split on the question of handing the money back because a vote has yet to take place, sources said "deep divisions" were expected to be exposed next week. The decision is expected to be made public in the group's annual results announcement early next month.
