Pound faces ‘existential crisis’, Bank of America warns
T he pound is facing an “existential crisis” and is likely to weaken further during this year, one of Wall Street’s top banks has warned. Bank of America says sterling “finds itself in an increasingly invidious position” for reasons including “increasingly challenging” Bank of England communication. Kamal Sharma, a London-based foreign exchange strategist for the lender, said the outlook for the pound was “grim”. The warnings came as the price of oil breached $120 (£95) a barrel on Monday, hitting a two-month high amid tightness in the market and concern over supplies. Oil prices have risen amid tight supply driven by the fallout from Russia’s war in Ukraine, as well as increased demand as more economies return from Covid-related restrictions. China announced easing of its restrictions, while the European Union worked on a plan to ban imports of Russian crude. The pound has fallen about 6.6pc this year in dollar terms, leaving it as one of the worst performers among the … [Read more...] about Pound faces ‘existential crisis’, Bank of America warns
MoD threatens to cut off fuel suppliers over use of Russian oil
Defence chiefs have threatened to cut off fuel suppliers over their use of Russian oil, after The Telegraph raised questions about British military supply chains. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said it would take “immediate action” to switch suppliers if they were found to be using Russian products in supplies provided. It buys fuel from a range of suppliers, including jet fuel from Motor Oil Hellas, a refinery based in Greece with whom it signed a new £10m contract in May this year for fuel to Cyprus. Motor Oil signed a five-year supply deal with Rosneft in November 2017, according to reports at the time, while tanker tracking data indicates shipments of fuel oil have been sent from Russia to its terminal in Corinth since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine . The Greece-listed company told analysts in April that its purchases of Urals crude oil, Russia’s flagship grade, amounted to about 5.5pc of its total purchases in 2021. A Ministry of Defence spokesman said it had “been … [Read more...] about MoD threatens to cut off fuel suppliers over use of Russian oil

Why Donald Trump won’t pick Ron DeSantis as 2024 running mate
Donald Trump appeared recently to keep open the possibility of Ron DeSantis being his running mate for 2024 amid speculation the Florida governor has his own ambitions to be president—but electoral college rules make it inadvisable for the pair to join forces. In a June 30 interview on Newsmax , the former president was asked if he could "envision a world" where there would be a Trump-DeSantis ticket in the next election cycle. In response, Trump did not dismiss the idea and instead played down any suggestions that there's a rift in the pair's relationship following continuing speculation DeSantis wants to challenge for the presidency, setting up a potential fight against his longtime ally for the GOP nomination.
