‘Black eyes flashing’: Lynette Dawson spoke of Chris’ rage, sister says

May 17, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz

Australian woman Lynette Dawson told her sister in the weeks before she vanished that her husband Chris was always angry with her and he left a note in their home saying “don’t paint too dark a picture of me to the girls”, a court has heard. Chris Dawson, 73, has pleaded not guilty in the New South Wales Supreme Court to murdering his wife , who vanished from her home at Bayview, on Sydney’s northern beaches, in January 1982. Continuing her evidence on Tuesday, Patricia Jenkins said she spoke to her younger sister Lynette one or two days before Christmas Day 1981, after finding out from their mother that “Chris had left”. It is not disputed by the defence that Dawson and JC, the couple’s babysitter and a former student of the high school teacher, had travelled to Queensland before Christmas “with a view to starting a new life”, but returned a short time later. Strictly Come Dancing’s Bruno Tonioli ‘quits BBC series after 18 years’

May 18, 2022 by metro.co.uk

Strictly Come Dancing judge Bruno Tonioli has quit the BBC flagship show after 18 years, reports claim. It is believed that the beloved judge, who was forced to miss last year’s series due to Covid travel restrictions, will now focus his attentions on Dancing With The Stars US, in which he also serves as a panellist. Bruno was unable to appear on Strictly in 2021, with professional dancer Anton Du Beke taking his place on the panel alongside Motsi Mabuse , Craig Revel Horwood , and Shirley Ballas . Since then, there has been much speculation as to whether Anton would replace Bruno full time, or whether there would be five judges in a major show shake-up. However, it now appears that Bruno has left altogether. ‘Bruno has quit the show for good,’ an insider said. They added to the Mail: ‘He’s going to be a judge only on Dancing With The Stars from now on.’ In February, reports claimed that bosses were planning to replace long-serving judge Bruno … [Read more...] about Strictly Come Dancing’s Bruno Tonioli ‘quits BBC series after 18 years’

Manchester City’s five key failings have given Liverpool hope in the title race

May 15, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

After the second draw of the season between Manchester City and Liverpool an unimaginative idea began to take root. The two title-chasers were so far ahead of the rest of the Premier League that surely both would win all of their remaining fixtures? Two London clubs in two weeks have intervened to kill that dubious notion. Clinching the title is still in City’s hands but their slip at West Ham has given Liverpool a chance. West Ham were their usual combination of feisty and well-drilled, but City made it more difficult for themselves than necessary. How did they resurrect a title race which had been missing, presumed dead? Curious crossing tactics At the beginning of the game, City found their range with a series of deep crosses and long shots, as if parsing dimensions of a battlefield ahead of a meticulous military operation. As the half progressed it became clear that high balls into the box were actually City’s main weapon to unlock West Ham's defence. May 19, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz

More than 50 dead ducks and several eels have been found in a highly polluted Auckland stream. The wildlife, which have been dying over the past couple of months, were at the stream running alongside Portland Road Reserve, Remuera. High levels of E coli and enterococci were found when the water was tested earlier this month by Auckland Council. A local of nearly 12 years, Carolyn Ravlich, said the area is usually filled with wildlife. Prior to the last few months, school kids would often run through the park in the afternoon to look at the ducks, she said. Auckland ramraids: 200 children doing most of the damage across city, meeting told

May 9, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz

Abigail Dougherty/Stuff Following a heavy spate of ramraids, a public meeting has been held to discuss what the next steps will be to tackle the incidents. After months of ramraids, businesses broken into and even cars smashing into the homes of residents, the people of Tāmaki have had enough. More than 200 people flocked to Sacred Heart College’s school hall on Monday evening to vent their frustrations about the spate in youth crime in the electorate, which has continued to escalate since mid-last year. Local MP Simon O’Connor hosted the meeting – he was joined by Police Area Commander Jim Wilson, Ōrākei councillor Desley Simpson and Ōrākei local board chairperson, Scott Milne. “We need an immediate response to the crime, the worst thing we can do is make excuses for people, including these young people,” said O’Connor. Somerset ‘super nature reserve’ revamp a boost for threatened species and climate fight

May 19, 2022 by news.sky.com

A new "super nature reserve" is being created across 15,000 acres of the Somerset landscape to help protect saltmarsh, heath and wetland habitats. Government conservation agency Natural England has announced plans for the Somerset Wetlands, which is home to rare and threatened species including skylark, bittern and avocet. The area in the Somerset Levels, Moors and coast is also known for homing insects including the hairy dragonfly, silver diving beetle, and the UK's second largest spider, the raft spider. It is also the second largest area of lowland peat in the UK and provides a significant carbon store. Tony Juniper, chairman of Natural England, said: "The creation of this very large National Nature Reserve is an important moment for nature recovery in England.
