0 Have your say Murrayfield. I didn’t want to have to write about the place again. At least not until I was due to go there for the purpose it was built – rugby and the autumn Tests beginning on 10 November with Scotland vs Fiji, two teams who love having the ball in their hands. I didn’t want to have to write about Murrayfield in a football context any more, having voted for Hampden in the great debate and I thought that conversation was over. Yet here we are preparing for the biggest game there’s even been amid the swish crescents of EH12 involving those whose preference is to kick. What a palaver, what a farce, what an embarrassment. You could call the Betfred Cup semi-finals imbroglio the basis for a good-going soap opera but that would be an insult to the likes of River City where there’s never been an attempt at overblown storylines which involve such violent lurches as we’ve witnessed over the past week, detonating the … [Read more...] about Aidan Smith: Hearts and Celtic could be a much-needed cup classic

Otago showed some fight with the bat on day two of its warm-up match against Canterbury in Alexandra yesterday. All-rounder Nathan Smith led the way with a crisp innings of 96 from 120 deliveries to help his side post 324 for nine declared. He stroked 11 boundaries and two sixes during his two and a-half hour stint at the crease. The 20-year-old's innings helped Otago overhaul Canterbury's total of 287 for nine. Josh Finnie also shone with 71 from 66, while Mark Craig's knock of 52 from 95 provided some backbone in the lower order. At stumps, Canterbury was four without loss trailing by 33 runs with a day to play. Earlier, runs were hard to come by as opener Brad Wilson struggled to get the scoreboard moving. The Volts resumed on five for two with Wilson unbeaten on two. He added another four runs to his overnight total but helped take some energy out of the attack on a slow wicket. Carisbrook-Dunedin captain Cam Hawkins also showed some grit with 37 from 111 balls. Their resolve … [Read more...] about Smith shines as Otago goes past Canterbury
DANIEL CRAIG’s licence to thrill is even more in demand than James Bond’s licence to kill. The busy actor seems to have shot down any hope of the next 007 film being hauled back on track in time for a 2019 release — by signing up for a new movie role. He will play the lead in a murder mystery which starts production in November, just a month before the latest Bond adventure was locked down for filming. The star has set up a deal in the last fortnight for the role in Knives Out, written and directed by Star Wars’ Rian Johnson. The new dad, who just welcomed his first child with actress Rachel Weisz, will play a lead detective in Knives Out, which is inspired by Agatha Christie thrillers. A source said: “Daniel is obviously already looking beyond Bond, and taking this gig makes it clear nobody expects to get things back on track anytime soon. It was supposed to start shooting very soon, but that’s now impossible.” It’s reported Johnson … [Read more...] about New James Bond film delayed as Daniel Craig double-books to star in another film that starts production in November

Joint Padiham boss Liam Smith was forced to apologise for his side’s form following the 2-1 defeat against Winsford United at the weekend. Despite Spencer Jordan giving the Storks the lead midway through the first half at the St Luke’s Barton Stadium, the Blues went on to condemn the visitors to a fourth successive defeat and a sixth loss in eight outings. It was Joe Duckworth’s double, in the space of seven second half minutes, that engineered the turnaround as Padiham suffered a seventh defeat on the bounce on the road in the Hallmark Security Premier Division.Having failed to win on their travels since December, when Dominic Craig’s brace was enough to take the points off Northwich Victoria, Smith took to social media to say: “I have to apologise to everyone connected with the football club at the moment. We will get this right.”The away side had taken the lead when Jay Hart’s set-piece landed at the feet of Jordan and the forward slotted the … [Read more...] about Joint boss Smith apologises for Storks’ dip in form
