Specialist rape courts are to be set up in Britain for the first time as Dominic Raab vowed to increase convictions . All court staff, police and prosecutors working on serious sex offence cases will receive specialist trauma training at three pilot courts while victims will get independent advisers to support them through the process and speak up for them. The scheme will be rolled out in Leeds, Newcastle and Snaresbrook Crown Courts, which will each have a dedicated courtroom for dealing with rape cases, while the rest of the building handles other offences. It follows a slump in prosecutions to just 1.3 per cent of the 67,125 offences recorded by police in 2021 as more than half of victims withdraw from cases due to intrusive investigations by police , delays that can average two or three years and trauma of reliving their attack in court. Courtrooms will also be equipped with new video technology and be able to take advantage of the rapid rollout of … [Read more...] about Specialist rape courts to be created to secure more convictions

Parents, religious schools win at the Supreme Court | Opinion
All over America, parents are worrying about what their children are being taught in public schools. They know that critical race theory and other far-left ideologies are creeping into lessons. Many want to move their kids to a private religious school—but the cost of tuition imposes an impossible financial burden. That is why many states are considering initiatives that allow taxpayer funds to help parents choose a faith-based school that meets their child's needs. Other states, gripped by anti-religious bigotry, are holding out against this liberating measure. So it's excellent news that the Supreme Court has overruled Maine's policy of denying public funds to private religious education for children even when there is no public school in their neighborhood. Maine justified its discrimination by applying the loaded term "sectarian" to religious schools. The state operates a system where school districts without a public high school pay tuition, up to a statutory limit, for … [Read more...] about Parents, religious schools win at the Supreme Court | Opinion
Keith Olbermann slammed for Twitter rant on dissolving Supreme Court
Political commentator Keith Olbermann is facing backlash after tweeting that "[i]t has become necessary to dissolve" the U.S. Supreme Court following the Court's ruling regarding a New York case that could help shape the national framework on gun laws. "The first step is for a state the 'court' has now forced guns upon, to ignore this ruling," Olbermann tweeted. "Great. You're a court? Why and how do [you] think you can enforce your rulings?" The decision of the Court to strike down a 100-year-old law , which required individuals to show "proper cause" in order to get a license and conceal-carry outside the home, is seen as a victory for Second Amendment proponents. Justice Clarence Thomas, who authored the majority opinion in the ruling on New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen , wrote, "New York's proper-cause requirement violates the Fourteenth Amendment by preventing law-abiding citizens with ordinary self-defense needs from exercising their Second … [Read more...] about Keith Olbermann slammed for Twitter rant on dissolving Supreme Court

The Supreme Court Just Made the NYPD’s Job Harder
Police officers have a vested interest in keeping illegal guns off the streets, a difficult-enough task already. Now the United States Supreme Court decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen has found unconstitutional the New York law that strictly limited who could carry a firearm in public in the nation’s largest metropolis. At one blow, this ruling ends a restriction that has for decades helped hold down the number of guns in private hands in New York City. The Court’s decision has made the job of the New York Police Department much harder overnight. Officers never know what will happen next. On patrol they may walk into a deli and be confronted with an armed robbery. They may conduct a routine car stop only to find themselves faced with a violent felon willing to murder a cop. Today I’m a professor of criminal justice, but I spent more than 20 years in the NYPD; I retired with the rank of captain. Gun crime was fairly common in the 1980s and … [Read more...] about The Supreme Court Just Made the NYPD’s Job Harder
Supreme Court rules to protect police from lawsuits over violating Miranda rights
Law enforcement officers who fail to provide criminal suspects with Miranda warnings prior to questioning cannot be subjected to civil lawsuits for their omissions, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Thursday. Justices determined by a 6-3 vote that receiving Miranda warnings — which notify individuals taken into custody of their rights to remain silent, speak with an attorney and ask for that attorney to be present during interactions with police — is not technically a protected constitutional right. The court's classification means that individuals deprived of their Miranda warnings before criminal interrogations take place will not have a foundation to bring legal claims that allege their civil rights were violated after the fact. It effectively protects police officers against civil litigation while also limiting individual protections against self-incrimination. "A violation of Miranda does not necessarily constitute a violation of the Constitution," wrote Justice Samuel … [Read more...] about Supreme Court rules to protect police from lawsuits over violating Miranda rights
Protests erupt over Supreme Court decision to overturn New York’s concealed carry law during anti-gun demonstrations
THE US Supreme Court struck down a New York law that required "proper cause" in order to receive a license to concealed carry, sparking anti-gun demonstrations. The ruling, which is expected to affect nearly one-quarter of the US population, had been in place for over a century before it was overturned Thursday in a 6-3 vote. This historical ruling comes days after a group of senators reached an agreement on new gun safety legislation that encourages "red flag" laws and enhanced background checks. In a statement regarding the recent overturning, President Joe Biden said he was "deeply disappointed." The president said the ruling "contradicts both common sense and the Constitution, and should deeply trouble us all." The decision greatly increased the amount of New York residents who are eligible to potentially carry a concealed weapon. read more sun stories MAGA DEMO Trump fans rip Jill Biden who WAVES at protesters with 'Fake First … [Read more...] about Protests erupt over Supreme Court decision to overturn New York’s concealed carry law during anti-gun demonstrations
US: Top court rules Americans have right to carry guns in public
The US Supreme Court on Thursday rejected as unconstitutional New York state's limits on carrying concealed handguns in public. It is expected that the justices' 6-3 decision could ultimately allow more people to legally carry guns on the streets of New York and other large cities such as Los Angeles and Boston. The ruling — the high court's first major gun decision in more than a decade — follows a series of recent mass shootings . Why is the decision important? New York's law — in place since 1913 — says that, to carry a concealed handgun, a person must have "proper cause." An individual would have to convince a state firearms licensing officer of a real, rather than speculative, need for self-defense. Licenses could also be granted for activities such as hunting or target practice. The challenge was brought by the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association. Two men were seeking an unrestricted ability to carry guns outside their homes. Backers of the New York … [Read more...] about US: Top court rules Americans have right to carry guns in public
