Andy Murray has underlined his determination to play Wimbledon at least one more time by deciding to miss the entire clay-court season, including the French Open. Murray, who won Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016 but has twice since undergone hip surgery, says that clay has aggravated his injuries in recent years and, while physically now “good and healthy”, does not want to take any chances ahead of Wimbledon. The French Open finishes only three weeks before Wimbledon starts but, with the wider clay-court season starting on April 4, it means that Murray will not play on the main ATP Tour for more than two months. Murray, however, did stress that he intends to compete “a bit” during this period, suggesting that he may also consider ATP Challenger tournaments ahead of the start of the main grass-court season on June 6, which includes the Queen’s Club Championships from June 13 ahead of Wimbledon from June 27. The 34-year-old is also a five-times champion at the Queen’s Club and is … [Read more...] about Andy Murray to miss 2022 French Open and will skip entire clay season

Emma Raducanu goes it alone in Madrid with display of true grit on clay
Emma Raducanu impresses as she beats Tereza Martincova in straight sets Briton wins seven games on the bounce to reach second round S uccess on clay is all about grit, in every sense, and that’s what Emma Raducanu demonstrated as she surged into the second round of the Madrid Masters with one of her finest performances since the US Open. The narrative around Raducanu in recent days has focused on her latest coach-sacking . The departure of Germany’s Torben Beltz was announced on Tuesday morning, in a statement that found her speaking of a new and possibly decentralised model involving no direct replacement for the moment. But it was a case of “no coach, no problem”, as Raducanu eased past Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic by a 7-6, 6-0 scoreline. She thus earns a meeting with the Ukraine’s Martya Kostyuk on Sunday – the same near-exact contemporary whom she lost to in Romania in October. (That was something of a hammering, although Raducanu was suffering with from … [Read more...] about Emma Raducanu goes it alone in Madrid with display of true grit on clay

Emma Raducanu beaten by gutsy Katerina Siniakova at Miami Open having been a set and break up
Emma Raducanu suffers another early defeat having been commanding position Siniakova shows huge fight to force her way back into the match Defeat continues poor run for Briton who's searching for consistency E mma Raducanu was once again a picture of dejection as she left the court in Miami last night. Here is a woman who simply cannot get over the line. This is now the third tournament running where she has lost after serving for the match. Raducanu is not being outclassed at these elite events, but in some ways it might be less painful if she were. Just as in her previous match – in Indian Wells a couple of weeks ago – she was on top for most of this contest, only to go down 7-5 in the decider. “Tough loss” is what they say on the tour in these situations. And during this slumping sophomore season, Raducanu is experiencing toughness at every turn. Yes, her matches might be consistently entertaining – but that is unlikely to offer much consolation. Dr Strange is a Marvel ripping yarn… and you’ll love the zombie! LIBBY PURVES reviews Dr Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness
Dr Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (12A, 126mins) Verdict : Bonkers and brilliant Rating: Always satisfying to see a British actor, an ex-Hamlet no less, as a Hollywood superhero. And you can see why Marvel — for whom one cosmos is never enough — needs our Benedict Cumberbatch as sorcerer Dr Stephen Strange, trespasser in multiple universes. He has a suavely deadpan, slightly depressed look, like a camel with a secret sorrow. As this ripping yarn opens, he leaps around giant nightmare pipework in space, battles fireballs, vaporises someone and puts his tie on by magic to attend a socialite New York wedding. From which he promptly leaps from a window to battle a huge octopus, rescue a teenager and slice a bus in half. And that's just the warm-up, before discovering that the kid — Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez — is a refugee between universes. It may be partly Strange's fault about the parallel universes, because he breached natural laws in the 2021 film … [Read more...] about Dr Strange is a Marvel ripping yarn… and you’ll love the zombie! Toxic waters in war-torn Ukraine: How not to phase out coal
"Before the war started, I used to water my garden with it, but now it's unusable," said 82-year-old pensioner Lyudmila Ivanovna Tarasova, sighing as she gestured toward the Komyshuvakha River, where the flowing water is an unsettling orange. Tarasova lives in a little wooden house on the outskirts of Zolote, in eastern Ukraine. The Komyshuvakha that runs close by is a tributary of the Severskiy Donets River, itself the main freshwater source for the war-torn region of Donbas . In recent weeks, the easternmost part of Ukraine has found itself once again in the spotlight, with fears of a Russian invasion mounting following an unprecedented buildup of troops at the border. Retiree Tarasova lives by the polluted Komyshuvakha River, and can no longer use it to water her garden Home to some 6.5 million inhabitants, Donbas has long been Ukraine's biggest industrial hub and a major coal producer. Over 200 years, an estimated 15 billion tons of the fossil fuel has been … [Read more...] about Toxic waters in war-torn Ukraine: How not to phase out coal
