UN court sides with Iran and orders US to lift some sanctions

October 3, 2018 by www.euronews.com

The United States has been ordered to lift some sanctions against Iran, in a symbolic victory for Tehran. The United Nations’ top court, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), says anything that has an impact on humanitarian aid and civil aviation safety must be suspended. President Donald Trump has moved to restore tough US sanctions after withdrawing from Tehran’s nuclear accord with world powers. Iran brought its case to The Hague based on the Treaty of Amity, a UN document dating from 1955, well before the 1979 Islamic revolution. What did the court say? In their ruling , the 15-strong panel of judges unanimously dismissed US objections that the court had no jurisdiction. Washington had argued that Iran’s action was a misuse of the court. The ruling also rejected US assurances, given in August, that sanctions would not affect humanitarian conditions. This was “not adequate to address fully the humanitarian and safety concerns raised” by Iran, the court … [Read more...] about UN court sides with Iran and orders US to lift some sanctions

How England’s part-time Euros trailblazers paved way for this summer’s home favourites

July 4, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

In 2009, a squad of part-time England players, earning just £16,000 a year, reached the final of the European Championship. Despite being thrashed 6-2 by Germany, it was a landmark moment for the modern women’s game – and an achievement not since bettered by any other England team. By then, the Football Association was starting to take the women’s game seriously. There were central contracts for the 17 best players in the country, a dedicated support staff for those on England duty, a strength and conditioning coach, a psychologist and a data and video analyst. But still there was an overwhelming sense football was just a part-time job. Even the best players had to find work to pay the bills. “Central contracts were a huge step in the right direction, and we were very grateful for it at the time,” said Rachel Brown-Finnis, England goalkeeper in 2009. “But when you’re in a final against some of the best players in the world, it showed us in pretty stark fashion that we still had a … [Read more...] about How England’s part-time Euros trailblazers paved way for this summer’s home favourites

July 6, 2022 by www.dailywire.com

The Biden administration provided Congress with a complete list of White House staffers and their salaries last week. The move — a required action since 1995 — provides lawmakers with a list of each West Wing employee’s title and pay. According to a Fox Business analysis, the “vast majority” of staffers earn more than $100,000, with 24 making the maximum of $180,000. Among the officials pulling down $180,000 are Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre , Chief of Staff Ron Klain, National Economic Council Director Brian Deese, Domestic Policy Advisor Susan Rice, Staff Secretary Neera Tanden, and National Climate Advisor Regina McCarthy. Last year, 22 staffers earned $180,000 — including former Press Secretary Jen Psaki , who left the administration for a slot at MSNBC earlier this year and was replaced by Jean-Pierre. Putin stages drills with Yars nuclear missiles capable of reaching UK

July 6, 2022 by metro.co.uk

Vladimir Putin has staged drills with his road-launched Yars nuclear missiles in a forest in western Siberia. Their 7,500-mile range means they are capable of striking the UK or anywhere in Europe. The tests come amid high tension with the West over the war in Ukraine , and against the backdrop of near-daily threats by Putin’s propagandists to deploy atomic weapons. In a statement, the Russian defence ministry said: ‘Over 100 pieces of hardware are taking part in the exercise. ‘Launch vehicles of the Yars road-mobile missile systems of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces’ Novosibirsk Missile Formation have trained redeployment during a scheduled drill. ‘While performing their manoeuvres, missile units and detachments dispersed in a forest to increase concealment.’ They trained in killing mock saboteurs, reconnoitring the launch area, and in passing through ‘contaminated’ areas, said the defence ministry. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has triggered the most … [Read more...] about Putin stages drills with Yars nuclear missiles capable of reaching UK

How does the EU plan to bypass US sanctions against Iran? | Euronews Answers

September 26, 2018 by www.euronews.com

The European Union is creating a new payment mechanism to allow countries to legally trade with Iran amid US sanctions. Here’s everything you need to know about the deal. What exactly did the EU and Iran agree to? Following a meeting with the foreign ministers of China, France, Germany, Russia, the UK and Iran, the EU’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini announced that new payment channels would be created to bypass US sanctions against Tehran. “EU Member States will set up a legal entity to facilitate legitimate financial transactions with Iran and this will allow European companies to continue trade with Iran, in accordance with European Union law, and could be opened to other partners in the world,” she explained. No diplomatic immunity in modern slavery cases, Supreme Court rules

July 6, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

By Caroline Hawley Published 1 hour ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The UK Supreme Court has ruled that diplomats cannot hide behind immunity to exploit workers, in a victory for campaigners against modern slavery. Diplomats are normally protected from both criminal charges and civil cases in the countries where they are posted. But the court found a Saudi diplomat accused of exploiting a Filipina domestic worker in London did not have immunity in relation to the allegation. The decision paves the way for the woman to seek compensation. Lawyers said it was the first ruling of its kind in the world. The case was brought by Josephine Wong, 30, who alleges she was forced to work for Khalid Basfar and his family in conditions of modern slavery. Her lawyers say she was confined to the house at all times except to take out the rubbish, subjected to … [Read more...] about No diplomatic immunity in modern slavery cases, Supreme Court rules
