The recent creation of the military-political directorate in the Russian Defense Ministry is due to the “undisguised and cynical information war” that the country is now facing on all fronts, the head of the body has said. “Today we see an absolutely undisguised informational war. It is openly cynical and it is being waged against our country on all fronts,” Colonel-General Andrey Kartapolov told reporters on Wednesday. “The raving propaganda and absolute lies on many issues, the intolerance to our point of view or attempts to hush it up - all of these are changing the society’s political conscience and in modern conditions such changes can have very serious consequences,” the general said, adding that anyone interested in particular examples of such negative consequences could have a look at certain countries near Russia’s borders. Foreign affairs chiefs from Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Ukraine met in Georgia this week to take part in commemorations marking 10 years since Russia’s 2008 invasion of the Caucasus Republic and reiterate hopes that the country could soon join NATO. During their joint appearance on Tuesday (7 August), the foreign ministers recalled the events of 7 August 2008, when Russia carried out armed aggression against Georgia, resulting in more than 150,000 people having to leave their homes and over 400 dead Georgian soldiers. The ministers called on Russia to rethink its decision to recognise the independence of the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Russia hiring North Korean ‘slave’ workers despite UN sanctions
Russia has been giving work permits to North Korean labourers despite a United Nations ban on the practice, which funds Pyongyang's nuclear weapons programme. On September 11, the UN forbid countries from authorising new employment contracts for North Koreans as part of sanctions meant to starve the Kim Jong-un regime of money following a string of nuclear blasts and missile tests last year. But documents seen by The Telegraph indicated that Russia has continued to approve work permits for North Koreans months after the UN ban. A decree on foreign workers posted by the labour ministry on December 6 approved positions for hundreds of North Koreans, mostly manual labour jobs like painter, bricklayer, carpenter or mechanic. The list gave companies permission to hire 1,237 North Koreans just in the Amur region near Russia's border with the Hermit Kingdom. Although NATO does not recognize the reunification of Crimea with Russia, the alliance's head, Jens Stoltenberg, has urged not to isolate Russia over this issue.
