Former heavyweight champion of the world Larry Holmes was typically forthright on Tuesday night as the guest of honour at an event where TAG Heuer launched a special edition Muhammad Ali watch in memory of the late fighter. Holmes, Ali's former sparring partner and later an opponent in Ali's waning years, told The Telegraph that his visit to the UK was a sign that the United States was missing the message about a great era of heavyweight kings to which they both belong. "What it means to me is we are slipping in America," Holmes said. "Muhammad Ali is one of the greatest fighters of all time. We've got to go all the way over to the UK to see one of the greatest of all time be honoured. It's amazing how he was loved all over the world. He was my idol. He gave me a job, gave me an opportunity. I ended up fighting him at the end of his career." The commemorative timepiece and replica gloves signed by Muhammad Ali were auctioned for the benefit of the Muhammad Ali Centre. The TAG … [Read more...] about Larry Holmes: ‘Muhammad Ali is one of the greatest of all time but you have to go to the UK to see him honoured’
J.J. Abrams has set his sights on one of the biggest hits of all time in Japan. He's teamed up with Paramount Pictures, under his Bad Robot production company, for a live-action adaptation of anime Your Name, a sci-fi infused love story which sees two teenagers - one from the city and one from the countryside - discover that they can swap bodies, communicating to each other through various notes and memos. However, they also discover that they're separated from each other by both time and space; when disaster threatens one of their towns, it's up to them to prevent the worst from happening. Produced by Toho and created, written, and directed by Makoto Shinkai, the film became the second-highest grossing domestic film in Japan, behind Spirited Away, and the fourth-largest ever, behind Titanic and Frozen. It's also the first anime not directed by Hayao Miyazaki to earn more than $100 million in Japan. "Your Name is a film created with the innate imaginations … [Read more...] about J.J. After Roger Federer became the only man ever to win eight Wimbledon title singles titles and 19 Grand Slam crowns overall, The Tennis Podcast discussed where he sits in the pantheon of all-time greats - and not just in tennis. Is he better than Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, and Rafael Nadal (who has a winning record against him)? Are his achievements superior to those of Serena Williams, Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova, or in other sports - Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan and Usain Bolt? Impossible questions to answer, perhaps, but that doesn’t stop BBC 5 Live’s David Law and the Telegraph’s Simon Briggs and Charlie Eccleshare from trying to on the podcast. The debate comes after Federer ruthlessly dispatched Marin Cilic, who’s movement was impeded by a bad blister, to win the title in straight sets. How much of Cilic’s capitulation was physical, and how much was mental and emotional, or did the former lead to the latter? We also … [Read more...] about The Tennis Podcast: Is Roger Federer the greatest sportsperson of all time?
Of all the musical genres, the 'greatest of all time' is undoubtedly most fierce in hip-hop. It's been chewed over for years and will continue to be for many more, but Jay Z has come up with an answer. Being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame this week, Jay thanked scores of rappers who inspired him on Twitter, including OGs like Rakim, KRS, Nas, Biggie, 2pac and Andre 3000, and more recent artists like Kendrick Lamar, Earl Sweatshirt, Travis Scott, Kanye West, Drake and Ab-Soul. He capped off the list of thanks: "And the greatest rapper of all time OBAMA". (Getty) (Getty) It's interesting that Jay conceives Obama as a rapper, perhaps because of his truth-telling, his desire to reach people and his path to become president. Obama himself discussed the latter as he inducted Jay into the hall of fame, saying in a video: “I like to think Mr. Carter and I understand each other. Nobody who met us when we were younger men would have expected us to be where we are … [Read more...] about Jay Z calls Barack Obama ‘the greatest rapper of all time’
Georges St-Pierre has revealed that the main reason behind his UFC comeback is to make history and cement himself as the best fighter of all time. The Canadian returned to the company after three years and it was soon announced that he would face Michael Bisping for the middleweight title. St-Pierre, who has a 25-2 record in MMA, is regarded as one of the best fighters of all time, having dominated the welterweight division as champion and remaining unbeaten from 2007 until 2013 when he vacated his belt as he needed time off. However, while the 35-year-old is undoubtedly the best welterweight of all time, there are many other candidates for "the greatest fighter of all time" moniker such as Anderson Silva, Fedor Emelianenko and Jon Jones. Therefore, St-Pierre is hoping that by the time his second run in the UFC is over, he would have made history and cemented his legacy as the best of all time. "I'm back for one reason, I want to make history," he said on The MMA Hour. "I'm going to be … [Read more...] about Georges St-Pierre aiming to cement place as greatest fighter of all time in second UFC run
IF you've walked through North Street Gardens in the last few days, you may have noticed an unusual memorial that has suddenly appeared there. It looks for all the world like a Victorian water pump, minus its pump handle (which is lying on the ground nearby). And that is, in fact, precisely what it is. Nearby is a small blue plaque set neatly into some paving. "John Snow (1813-1858)," it reads. "Pioneer of public health and anaesthesia. Proved that cholera is water-borne." So who was this mysterious John Snow? And why on earth has someone planted a Victorian water pump in North Street Gardens in his memory? Snow was born in North Street on March 15, 1813 - 204 years ago. The street was then one of the poorest parts of York, and Snow came from the humblest of beginnings: his father, William, was a labourer in a nearby coalyard. Yet despite this, Snow rose to become one of the most famous doctors of his age. He was a pioneer in the field of anaesthetics - and in fact was so … [Read more...] about York’s memorial to ‘the greatest doctor of all time’ (From York Press)

Former world number one Andy Roddick believes Serena Williams should be regarded in the same vein as Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali as the greatest athlete of all time. Serena Williams recently won the 2017 Australian Open, beating her sister Venus Williams 6-4, 6-4 to win the event for a record seventh time. In the process, she overtook Steffi Graf for most Grand Slam singles titles in the Open era with 23. The 35-year-old, who took over as world number one from Angelique Kerber following the Australian Open, is now one major title away from tying Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slams, the most that any player has won in tennis history. Roddick, a former US champion, told ESPN: "It's amazing. I've known Serena since we were 8 or 9 years old. "To see her go from the girl I used to practice next to all the time to become this icon — and not just one of the greatest women athletes of all time, but one of the greatest athletes of all time, it's amazing. David Baddiel, Jenny Eclair and Alexei Sayle were among the comedians, writers and performers who chose their favourite shows, one-liners, characters and actors. Fawlty Towers, which first aired in 1975, scored a third of the comedians’ votes in the sitcom category. The outcome echoed a 2000 British Film Institute poll of industry professionals which placed Fawlty Towers at the head of a list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes. The comedians’ poll place I’m Alan Partridge, the BBC series starring Alan Partridge and co-written by Armando Iannucci as the second funniest sitcom, with Blackadder following behind. Hugo Lloris is the greatest Tottenham goalkeeper of all time, according to Teddy Sheringham. Lloris joined Spurs from Lyon in 2012 and has established himself as a key figure at White Hart Lane in recent years. Mauricio Pochettino named the Frenchman club captain last summer and Lloris has been pivotal in helping transform Spurs into the one of the best defensive units in the Premier League. The 29-year-old has conceded just one goal from open play in England's top tier this season, prompting many to suggest he has edged ahead of David de Gea to become the division's best shot stopper. Sheringham has lavished even more praise on Lloris and rates Tottenham's current number one higher than the likes of Pat Jennings, Ray Clemence, Bill Brown and Ted Ditchburn. "Lloris - very lively, agile goalie and a rock and foundation of the team right now," Sheringham said when asked to pick Tottenham's best goalkeeper as part of new book 'Down Memory Lane.' The Belgian told Standard Sport: "I hope … [Read more...] about Hugo Lloris is Tottenham’s greatest goalkeeper of all time, says Teddy Sheringham
