The Women Burning Their Degree Certificates

September 3, 2021 by www.theatlantic.com

When the last of the remaining United States forces departed from Afghanistan this week, they took with them more than 100,000 people, some of whom were Afghanistan’s most educated and skilled citizens. For these politicians, artists, scholars, and activists, the withdrawal represented not only the end of their country as they knew it, but the end of any hope they might have had in helping shape its future. These aren’t the only people Afghanistan has lost over the past few weeks. Perhaps just as important is another group: those still in the country who have gone into hiding in fear for their lives under Taliban rule, some erasing any remnants of who they once were—female journalists who have deleted evidence of their work, artists who have destroyed their creations, and women who have burned their degrees. The void that these two sets of people leave behind will undoubtedly be felt as the Taliban attempts to reassert its control—a process that includes reestablishing basic … [Read more...] about The Women Burning Their Degree Certificates

A Functional Immigration System Would Look Nothing Like America’s

November 19, 2018 by www.theatlantic.com

President Donald Trump says that the U.S. immigration system is broken, and in recent days he has railed against what he says is an “ invasion ” by Central American migrants making their way to the United States. Along with a regular diet of tweets to that effect, he has accelerated the process begun during the Obama presidency of deporting those in the country illegally; criticized the migration of family members of American citizens; and called for a merit-based system of immigration. Trump’s support for a policy that attracts skilled workers might run counter to his administration’s actual actions , but it underscores a conundrum that has bedeviled successive presidential administrations: how to fix the country’s immigration system, with its years-long backlogs and millions of undocumented workers, while remaining competitive in a global marketplace. Any answer would draw from the three elements that make up legal immigration in the Western world: an economic stream, a … [Read more...] about A Functional Immigration System Would Look Nothing Like America’s

Recording background vocals for a new song by country star Darius Rucker. Bringing down the house at the Neshoba County Fair in their native state of Mississippi. Topping the iTunes country chart just after their audition aired. The hits just keep comin', as they say, for New Orleans singing trio Chapel Hart since they first appeared on NBC's "America's Got Talent" on July 19. That night, they received a standing ovation for their original song, "You Can Have Him, Jolene," inspired by Dolly Parton's 1973 classic, "Jolene;" and capturing the coveted "golden buzzer" advancing the singers straight to the semifinals round. The trio — sisters Danica and Devynn Hart and their cousin, Trea Swindle — will be back on the show for the second round of semifinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday. They'll be performing against 10 other semifinalists. Only two of those 11 acts will be voted into the finals. That announcement comes on Wednesday's show, also at 7 p.m. and also live. ‘What does Britain want?’ France blasts Cameron as he STILL fails to outline EU demands

More info The Prime Minister has come under fire for not fully disclosing details of his much-vaunted renegotiation of Britain's EU membership , despite jetsetting around Europe for a series of talks in the wake of his general election victory. Instead, the Tory leader has only given a broad indication of his priorities, as well being vague on when a promised in/out referendum will take place. Mr Cameron's priorities for reform are said to mainly involve changes to the freedom of movement rules, including ensuring EU migrants are employed before entering Britain and putting a block on migrant benefits until they have been … [Read more...] about ‘What does Britain want?’ France blasts Cameron as he STILL fails to outline EU demands

Our ailing economy needs another dose of Thatcher’s shock treatment

August 14, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

It is now not long before a new Prime Minister takes office. Amid the flurry of plans and promises, it is high time to sketch out the nature and scale of the challenge that lies ahead. Of course, we are currently passing through a period of acute difficulty, associated with high energy and other costs. Moreover, the pressure from this factor will only get worse over coming months. Yet believe it or not, this crisis will pass. The really important questions concern what happens then. Make no mistake, before this crisis hit us we were already in a bad way, with productivity growth down to nugatory levels and overall performance weak. What is the essence of this problem and what needs to be done? I have been rereading Nigel (now Lord) Lawson’s memoirs of his time in government in the 1980s, entitled “The View from No 11.” They make fascinating reading. Most people will know that, beginning in 1979, Mrs Thatcher’s government faced a tough task trying to improve the performance of the … [Read more...] about Our ailing economy needs another dose of Thatcher’s shock treatment

Former federal prosecutor: A damning pattern of facts against Trump | Opinion

August 15, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A week after the unprecedented search warrant to retrieve classified documents stashed at former President Donald Trump 's Mar-a-Lago club, the critical looming question is why did Trump conceal highly sensitive national security information even after he received a grand jury subpoena for them? The fact pattern is damning. In January 2022, seven months ago, the National Archives succeeded in retrieving 15 boxes of materials from Trump's time in the White House, which the Archives discovered included "classified national security information." This discovery prompted the Archives to refer the matter to the Department of Justice for further investigation, which later obtained all classified information found in the retrieved boxes. Sometime in the spring, DOJ issued a subpoena to Trump for additional documents that they believed he had not previously turned over. This in and of itself was an unusual escalation, since Trump surely would have been afforded the opportunity to … [Read more...] about Former federal prosecutor: A damning pattern of facts against Trump | Opinion

My Escape From the Taliban

August 15, 2022 by www.theatlantic.com

T he text message came a little before 5 p.m. It was August 26, 2021. Eleven days earlier, the Taliban had overthrown the Afghan government. My friend—a German writer and academic—had been trying to help my family flee the country. Now she told me she had gotten my two younger sisters and me on the list for a flight to Frankfurt, a last-minute evacuation negotiated by the German government and a nonprofit group. “What about my mom?” I asked. She didn’t reply for a moment. “I was not able to get her on this flight,” she answered. Please, I begged her: “My brothers are gone and my father is living with his second wife. She just has us, no one else, for God’s sake please do something.” But there was nothing she could do. “These are the names that they offered me,” she wrote. “I know it’s a terrible choice.” She said we had 20 minutes to decide whether to stay or go. We would need to pack, then take a taxi to a secret location, where we’d meet the buses that would drive the … [Read more...] about My Escape From the Taliban
