At the age of 12, Myles, who grew up in Leith, was told he had developed hepatitis. Now 50, he is one of about 4,000 people who will receive compensation as a victim of the blood scandal which saw thousands of people contract HIV or hepatitis C in the 1970s and 1980s through NHS treatments. Patients with haemophilia and other bleeding disorders were unaware that the Factor VIII blood clotting products they were given were contaminated. Some died after developing AIDS and others developed serious chronic conditions. Tory leadership candidates Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak don’t have a single new idea between them when it comes to Northern Ireland and Brexit. It won’t make much difference to people in Northern Ireland who ends up being prime minister because both will pursue the same failed policy as Boris Johnson. Both vow they will press ahead with the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill, unless the EU caves to British demands over the Irish Sea border. The Bill will hand ministers the power to tear up the treaty, which Brussels warns will break international law and bring retaliation. Liz Truss rejected a plea to restore the abortion ban in Northern Ireland while Rishi Sunak vowed to be "much tougher" on the benefits system in the latest Conservative Party hustings in Belfast. Responding to an audience member who claimed Westminster had "undemocratically" imposed abortion laws on Northern Ireland, Ms Truss said: "I'm afraid I don't agree with you. We are a United Kingdom and we need all our laws to apply across the United Kingdom. That is what a Union is."
