BATHERS were banned from the water along much of the Costa Blanca yesterday after the reappearance of Portuguese Man O’Wars. An 11-year-old boy was rushed to hospital after being stung by one of the jellyfish-like creatures on the few beaches that remained open on some of the most popular parts of the coastline with Brit holidaymakers. The red flag was also hoisted at La Marina beach near Elche - where the youngster was hurt - after he was stung. Lifeguards removed the animal’s tentacles from his arm but he was taken to nearby Elche Hospital after complaining of stomach and neck pain. He was discharged a few hours later after receiving treatment. Local reports said nearly 75 miles of Costa Blanca coastline had been declared off limits. Only one beach is understood to have been kept open in Alicante and bathing allowed in part of San Juan beach a few miles further north on the stretch of coastline between El Campello near Alicante and Pilar de la Horadada south of … [Read more...] about Massive plague of Portuguese Man O’Wars cause chaos in the Med – as tourists are banned from Costa Brava beaches

If lying on a beach, sipping on cocktails and soaking up the rays sounds like your dream holiday, then an all-inclusive resort could be just the ticket. In fact it can prove to be more budget-friendly than paying for your flights, beachside hotel, restaurants and activities separately - especially if you're travelling with the kids who'll need entertaining every day. Just how much more does it cost to take your children away in the school holidays than in term-time. And why? After it was revealed that parents in North East Lincolnshire were fined 465 times last year for taking their children on unauthorised term-time holidays, we had a look to see just what a difference it makes. We've compared a holiday for two adults and two children in June, when there are no school or bank holidays, with exactly the same one in August - the height of school summer holidays. A Monday to Friday stay at Center Parcs in the UK in June costs £579. But the same holiday, if taken in August, would cost almost double, at £1049. In June, the cost of flights and a fortnight at a standard hotel in Disney World, Florida came to £3,960. If a family with two children opted to visit in August instead, they would pay £5,556. A week-long stay at a three-star campsite just outside of Paris, if booked through Eurocamp, costs £443 in June. The same holiday … [Read more...] about How much more does it cost to go away in school holidays?
A Dalry woman fears for her holiday in the Spanish sun over a passport mix-up she claims is “a serious breach” of the Data Protection Act. Charmaine Firth is caught up in a chain of at least five Galloway residents who have received someone else’s passport in error. Forty-four-year-old Charmaine has turned detective to try to find hers – so far without success. Now she fears husband Jonathan, son Kalen and daughter Keira will have to fly off to the Costa Brava from Prestwick on April 11 without her. Charmaine, a mortgage adviser with Santander in Dumfries, said: “It’s absolutely ridiculous – it’s shocking. “We have only two weeks before we go on holiday. There’s four of us supposed to be going but now it might just be three. “Somewhere along the line the white envelopes have been mixed up.” She added: “Somebody dishonest could have got a hold of my details – my place of birth, passport number, date of … [Read more...] about Fears for holiday after passport mix-up
