Households are suffering from the biggest cut in living standards since the 1950s amid escalating food and fuel bills alongside rising taxes and interest rates. Inflation is at 9%, its highest level in 40 years, driven by spiralling energy and food prices. The average UK household’s annual energy bill rose from £1,277 to £1,971 in April (equal to an extra £60 a month), while food prices are up around 6% on a year ago with the average UK household now spending an extra £23 per month. Meanwhile, the Bank Of England raised interest rates from 1% to 1.25%, the fifth consecutive rise, last week. And around nine in ten households have felt the impact of rising prices, according to official data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Here, we speak to three households about how they are coping with the ever-worsening cost of living crisis… ‘The government needs to give people more financial support’ Su Morgan, 42, runs a coffee subscription service called Dog … [Read more...] about The families on the frontline of the cost of living crisis: ‘It’s not fair that people are struggling so much’

Councils forced to ‘rip up financial plans’ as inflation adds £800m to costs
Councils will be forced to ditch spending plans and draw up emergency cuts to public services after the highest inflation in 40 years sparks an £800m surge in costs. The Local Government Association (LGA) warned that inflation will force local leaders to make cuts to frontline services and poses a “serious risk to the future financial viability” of some councils. James Jamieson, chair of the body representing local authorities, said funding for social care, bin collections and support for poor households could be at risk as councils scramble to meet their legal requirement to balance the books. Council budgets were signed off earlier this year but soaring inflation has eroded funding for public services in real terms. Analysis by the LGA found surging prices will increase council costs by £800m this year. It estimates that inflation, higher energy bills and increases to the National Living Wage will combine to add an extra £2.4bn in costs this year, climbing to a … [Read more...] about Councils forced to ‘rip up financial plans’ as inflation adds £800m to costs
American living in the UK questions why Brit supermarkets have ‘same ugly floor’
Many things in life may cause people confusion – from the chicken to the egg or the correct pronunciation of scone. It can be truly baffling. But, this American living in the UK has been left befuddled by British supermarket flooring. READ MORE: American feels they've been 'lied to' after trying British cheese for first time Not quite the great philosophical question, but this US expat has questioned why the shop floors have the ‘exact’ same pattern. Instead of turning to Google or flipping through pages of a book to search for the answer, the American put their trust in TikTok to figure out why supermarket floors are the ‘same’. The eagle-eyed American took a walk around the aisles of Sainsbury's and asked: “Why do all grocery stores in the UK have the exact same floor? It's so ugly it makes me not want to buy anything?” In true British fashion, many people fled to the comments on the viral clip to mock the American – and some gave more probable answers. One … [Read more...] about American living in the UK questions why Brit supermarkets have ‘same ugly floor’
Living through Japan’s hottest summer on record
By Rupert Wingfield-Hayes` Published 20 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Masaya Maruyama, his wife Junko and his brother Koichi, were sitting under the tailgate of their work van, trying to find a tiny bit of shade, as they drank profusely from large bottles of orange soda. The family of plumbers had been out in the baking sun laying pipes since 08:00 local time. By 11:00, the temperature at the construction site in Isezaki was hovering around 42C. "It got up to 47C the other afternoon," Mr Maruyama says. When asked how he manages to work in such sweltering temperatures, he says: "It's scary, I've never seen anything like this before." The three of them are all wearing jackets that have built-in electric fans that blow cool air around their bodies. But it seems barely adequate. For many in Japan, the heat over the last few days feels strange, and … [Read more...] about Living through Japan’s hottest summer on record
The electric Ford F-150 Lightning pickup is remaking city fleets
With the launch of the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning , the all-electric pickup is slowly making its way into the hands of customers. Among those clamoring to get their orders are city governments that want to take the electrification of their fleets to the next level. Across the country, Pro models of the Lightning are arriving at municipal depots for a variety of use cases. Alan Bates, a fleet business operations supervisor in Portland, Oregon, told Newsweek that using Lightnings is a confluence of the city's sustainability goals and having vehicles that can do the lion's share of the work required by a city. Portland just recently took delivery of their first one. "Of all of the 2,600 vehicles that we manage for the city, work trucks are one of the biggest categories we have," he said. As Bates and his team looked for ways to electrify that fleet, looking at the spec sheet of the Lightning convinced them that the first mainstream electric truck was right for them. … [Read more...] about The electric Ford F-150 Lightning pickup is remaking city fleets
Threepenny Composer
MY favorite photograph of Kurt Weill captures the enigmatic quality of his life and music. At a rehearsal for the 1943 show Mary Martin sits atop an upright piano, her shapely legs dangling in front of the composer's face. Weill seems to be somewhere else. Baby-faced and bald, his eyes half closed, he seems to be playing for himself alone. His blank expression could mask humiliation or contempt or delight -- you can't tell. What is this professor doing on Broadway? This year is Kurt Weill's centenary, so the calendar is full of Weill events -- and for once there seems to be a real urgency to the commemorative festivities. Weill remains a cult composer, known mainly for a handful of songs; most of his complete works are rarely performed, and critical opinion is still unsettled. Hearing his works again -- particularly the revelatory early Second Symphony and the overpraised "Broadway opera" -- could restore balance to a reputation long skewed. The standard view of Weill divides … [Read more...] about Threepenny Composer

Heinz baked beans removed from Tesco shelves in row over ‘unjustifiable’ price rise
Heinz has pulled its baked beans and ketchup from Tesco’s shelves in a row over prices. US conglomerate Kraft Heinz has paused supplies of some products to Britain’s largest supermarket, triggering gaps on shelves and Tesco’s website. It stems from a dispute between the two businesses over putting up the price of some Heinz products as costs rise in the food supply chain. Heinz is understood to want to raise prices but Tesco has resisted, publicly defending its decision to protect its customers from ‘unjustifiable price increases”. Highlighting Heinz baked beans as one of the products affected, the supermarket told customers to stock up on Branston Baked Beans or Tesco own brand products instead. The row is reminiscent of “Marmitegate”, which saw jars of the spread disappear from Tesco shops in 2016 as the supermarket resisted owner Unilever’s bid to raise wholesale prices. A spokesman for Kraft Heinz said the company faced significant increases in commodity and production … [Read more...] about Heinz baked beans removed from Tesco shelves in row over ‘unjustifiable’ price rise
