More info Liberal Democrat MP Christine Jardine took aim at the Boris Johnson ’s Government for their lack of response to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis fuelled by hikes in energy prices and inflation . The Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak has been under mounting pressure to provide additional support but has so far failed to do so. The Conservative minister Rachel MacLean has suggested struggling families should take on more hours and seek better-paid work opportunities to cushion the effect of rising prices. ‘Someone please shoot that dog!’ orders Boris Johnson, after Dilyn chewed priceless books and furniture
Boris Johnson called for someone to shoot his dog Dilyn, after the Jack Russell chewed priceless books and furniture at Chequers and landed the Prime Minister with a four-figure bill, it has been claimed. Downing Street has remained tight-lipped about claims the mischievous dog had chewed chair legs, mounted valuable artefacts and urinated on carpets in Mr Johnson’s country residence. Dilyn, a Jack Russell cross beloved by the Mr Johnson's fiancee, Carrie Symonds, caused so much damage Mr Johnson was forced to pay over £1,000 for repairs, the Daily Mail has reported. A source told the newspaper Mr Johnson was meeting colleagues at the house when Dilyn “darted under the PM’s feet with an old book in its mouth”. The Prime Minister shouted: “For God’s sake, I’m going to get another £1,000 repair bill! Someone please shoot that f------ dog!”, according to the source, who added: “I don’t think he meant it literally.” A minister said Dilyn had urinated in the house during an … [Read more...] about ‘Someone please shoot that dog!’ orders Boris Johnson, after Dilyn chewed priceless books and furniture
Boris Johnson’s protocol gamble raises risk of a trade war with the EU and a political crisis in NI
The body language said it all on Monday as the leaders of Northern Ireland's two main parties faced the cameras after crunch talks with Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Sinn Fein President Mary Lou McDonald, flanked by the first minister-elect Michelle O'Neill , was clearly furious as she accused the prime minister of making it his priority to placate the Democratic Unionist Party over getting the Stormont assembly up and running again. "What we needed to hear from Boris Johnson is that the executive must be formed. No ifs, no buts, no conditionality and no unionist veto." But with the DUP unwilling to participate in power-sharing at Stormont until it has succeeded in overhauling the customs border in the middle of the Irish sea, there is a unionist veto that Mr Johnson is trying to unlock. And when DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, emerged from his audience with the prime minister, his demeanour was of a politician who had made progress. Boris Johnson pledges to slash 91,000 Whitehall jobs after civil servants demand right to work from abroad
Boris Johnson unveiled plans to cut 91,000 civil service jobs on Thursday night as Whitehall opened a new front in their battle with ministers over working from home by seeking the right to work from abroad. The Prime Minister said the savings made from cutting “swollen” Whitehall departments would be ploughed back into helping people with the cost of living crisis, hinting it may be used to fund future tax cuts. At a Cabinet away day in Stoke-on-Trent on Thursday he gave each member of his top team one month to come up with plans for slimming down their own department as part of a drive to cut the overall number of officials by a fifth. “We have got to cut the cost of government to reduce the cost of living. Every pound the government pre-empts from the taxpayer is money they can spend on their own priorities, on their own lives”, he told the Daily Mail. The new policy, which No 10 says will shave £3.5 billion a year off the cost of running Whitehall, will take the civil … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson pledges to slash 91,000 Whitehall jobs after civil servants demand right to work from abroad

Boris ‘set to give green light to NI bill’ amid crisis talks
Boris Johnson could give the go-ahead to controversial legislation overriding parts of the Brexit deal on Northern Ireland this week as he flies to Belfast for crunch meetings. The prime minister is understood to be poised to start pushing through changes to the Northern Ireland Protocol, which requires trade checks in the Irish Sea, on Tuesday. He will be negotiating for the return of Northern Ireland’s power-sharing devolved government, which collapsed when the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) refused to re-enter it following recent elections. The protocol was set up to ensure free trade continued across the Irish land border after Brexit, but the DUP says it undermines the principles of devolution and its position in the UK. Assembly elections on May 5 returned a majority for parties who accept the protocol, including Sinn Féin, who are now the largest party. Despite signing up to it as part of the wider deal, the UK government is critical of the protocol and … [Read more...] about Boris ‘set to give green light to NI bill’ amid crisis talks

Jacob Rees-Mogg: Fixed penalty notices ‘go against British tradition’
Fixed penalty notices go against British tradition, Jacob Rees-Mogg has suggested as he urged a debate on the current system in the wake of “partygate” . Mr Rees-Mogg – a staunch ally of Boris Johnson who dismissed the row around lockdown-busting Downing Street parties as “fluff” – said the fines risked unintended consequences. A fixed penalty notice is an alternative to prosecution at a magistrates’ court and is often applied for parking and speeding offences as well as being used for antisocial behaviour and breaches of Covid rules during the pandemic. Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor, and Mr Johnson both received £50 fixed penalty notices from the Metropolitan Police for breaches of Covid restrictions last month. There is no legal requirement to interview a suspect before a decision is made to issue a fixed penalty notice, but police are still obliged to give a suspect the opportunity to answer allegations against them. Mr Rees-Mogg, the minister for Brexit … [Read more...] about Jacob Rees-Mogg: Fixed penalty notices ‘go against British tradition’
The EU’s disgraceful threats of a trade war over the Irish Protocol is more proof they just want to punish us for Brexit
IT is very easy to spot people who don’t know what they’re talking about with the Northern Ireland Protocol. Politicians in the US and EU constantly talk about it as though what is at issue is “peace” within Northern Ireland . And that anyone who wants to repeal it is risking the peace. What they seem not to realise is that the Northern Ireland Protocol (signed in 2019) and the Good Friday Agreement (signed in 1998) are not the same thing. It was the 1998 agreement that assured peace on the island of Ireland. Whereas the 2019 protocol was something signed in order to ensure that this country actually acted on the 2016 Brexit vote. I can usually clear a room in about five minutes by talking about Northern Ireland. But it is important. And here’s the crucial thing. The UK only signed the protocol (which effectively put a customs border down the Irish sea) because we had no other option.
