Cork will host a major conference on cybersecurity in September with the burgeoning cybercrime industry’s exponential growth expected to exceed €4.5 trillion in two years.Cork firm Smarttech247 is behind FutureSec, which will take place at Cork Opera House on September 24 with speakers from the FBI, An Garda Síochána, Data Protection Commission, Laya Healthcare, FBD Insurance, Vectra, and others. The inaugural Cork Proms will be staged at Cork Opera House during the Midsummer Festival, in June, and will, hopefully, become an annual event, says Siobhan Howe.The Proms conjure up images of the Royal Albert Hall in London, with orchestral musicians gathered around a conductor.The three evenings of the Cork Proms, at Cork Opera House, in June, are being curated by director, Wayne Jordan, and conductor, John O’Brien. Many opera house goers will be familiar with Jordan as director of ‘Prodijig’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz’. Reggae royalty, Ireland’s most famous comedy actress and Cork’s first ever Proms concerts are just a few of the attractions at this year’s Cork Midsummer Festival. Running from June 13-23, the full programme for the event will be unveiled today, but an early glimpse at the lineup suggests the festival is continuing its upward trajectory of recent years. Among the international visitors to be announced later will be the first visit to Cork by Jamaican dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson. Famous for a bass-heavy series of socially-conscious albums in the late 1970s and early ’80s, the London-based poet will be reading at the Crosstown Drift literary strand. This year’s festival has lined up a particularly strong theatre programme, including a new Enda Walsh play, starring Pauline McLynn in a very serious role for her second collaboration with the Corcadorca company.
