A former armed police officer is to be paid almost £1 million in compensation after she was forced to endure a sexist “boys club culture” within an elite firearms unit. Rhona Malone won an employment tribunal in 2021 against Police Scotland in a case which began when a senior officer said two female firearms officers should not be deployed together if a man was also available. Employment judges also accepted evidence that an instructor had said women should not be firearms officers because of how menstruation affected their temperament and that topless photos of women would be posted in a work WhatsApp group. Ms Malone, in her mid-40s, who had an exemplary record in the force before she retired in 2020 due to ill health, has agreed a £947,909 settlement with Police Scotland, it was confirmed on Friday. Iain Livingstone, the Chief Constable, also issued a personal apology for the “serious issues” highlighted by her case. A Timaru croquet club has been targetted by thieves for the second time in four years, with club members needing to fundraise to replace the stolen items. A John Deere lawn mower, a four-wheeled garden trolly, a custom-made croquet mallet, and timer clocks were taken at the break-in at Ashbury Croquet Club, in Park View Tce, believed to have taken place between May 3 and 4, chairperson Maurice Young said. It follows the theft of another lawnmower from the club about four years ago, which was never recovered. “The green lawnmower is self-propelled and pretty distinctive,” Young said.
