Mum placed in coma after headache ‘from work stress’ turned out to be brain tumour
A mum who thought stress was causing her headaches was placed in a coma after doctors found a brain tumour that had been growing for at least five years. Rachel Carter, 46, had been feeling tired, forgetful and suffering with headaches and thought it was down to her stressful job. But shortly after coming home from a holiday in Tunisia, the mum-of-two from Newport suffered a seizure and was rushed to hospital where she was placed in an induced coma. She told Wales Online : “My job involved a lot of driving and being away from home. It was a busy, stressful role, so when I first started suffering with fatigue and headaches in 2019, I thought it was work-related. "I was also becoming forgetful and was struggling to sleep but it wasn’t until June that year that I realised something much more serious was going on. Doctors at Royal Gwent Hospital found a "shadow" at the front of her brain and she was transferred to the University Hospital of Wales. Secret tunnel dating back hundreds of years found by workmen moving garden pole
A secret tunnel unused for hundreds of years was stumbled upon by workmen. A Western Power Distribution team were on a job in Tintern, Monmouthshire moving an overhead power line. When they started digging up a footpath which ran parallel to a fast flowing stream they realised something unusual was underfoot, Wales Online reported. They dug down and realised it was a four foot-high man-made passage. "Before work began we'd done all the usual checks and nothing had shown up on any of our drawings or records to indicate there was anything unusual about the site," said technician Allyn Gore. "But shortly after the excavation began, the digging team made the extraordinary discovery of what they initially thought to be a cave." He added: "Work stopped immediately and we were called in to decide what course of action we should take next. "I have previously been involved in other excavations where we've discovered old wells and cellars not shown on any plans, but nothing as … [Read more...] about Secret tunnel dating back hundreds of years found by workmen moving garden pole
Coronavirus helps golf to bounce back in Japan
A symbol of wealth and social standing in Japan 40 years ago, golf suffered a deep downswing in its popularity after the nation's economic bubble burst in the early 1990s. With the advent of the coronavirus pandemic and a dramatic shift in the lifestyles of many Japanese, the sport is enjoying new-found popularity. The Golf Digest Online course reservation site reported a record number of bookings in calendar 2020, up 12% on the previous year, while the organization for golf course operators announced that player numbers were up 10% in October compared to that of the same month one year earlier, which was before the pandemic struck. Similarly, operators of golf driving ranges and companies selling golfing equipment and specialist clothing for the sport are all reporting increased sales. The recent boom in the sport is "incredible," says Bennett Galloway, president and CEO of the Galloway Golf Group and a player in Japan for 30 years. And he says that while it may have been … [Read more...] about Coronavirus helps golf to bounce back in Japan
Daughter ‘absolutely outraged’ after council parks large skip on mum’s grave
A woman was left "absolutely outraged" after discovering a large skip had been placed on her mum's grave. Shannon O'Brien visited the resting place of her mum Catherine at the cemetery in Alfteron on Tuesday, March 2. The 20-year-old was shocked to find a large container of soil sitting on top of it, Derbyshire Telegraph reported . Several expensive ornaments including a personalised memorial wreath and a cross had been damaged. The destruction came just a year and a half after Catherine took her own life in November 2019. The environmental health officer had suffered from bipolar disorder. The damage, which was caused by a council skip, has added further heartache to the grieving family. Shannon said: "We were absolutely outraged when visiting the cemetery that the council had done this to her gravesite. "My mum sadly died to suicide and this was her resting place. For it to be treated in this way is horrifying. I can't really put it into words. "There was more … [Read more...] about Daughter ‘absolutely outraged’ after council parks large skip on mum’s grave
