Jack Ross says Josh Maja is a level-headed goalscorer, and he hopes he will weigh up all the factors and decide to stay at Sunderland if somebody tries to entice him away in mid-season. The 19-year-old scored his 10th goal of the season at Morecambe on Tuesday, but his first since early October. Despite that, Ross says his demeanour has been much the same since. To have reached double-figures before Christmas at such a young age is sure to attract plenty of attention in January, particularly with Maja stalling over an extension to the contract due to expire in the summer. But Ross hopes the many footballing reasons to stay will work in the Black Cats’ favour with him and any other in-demand players during the transfer window. Hampered by an ankle injury, Maja has had a difficult few weeks, but showed his class with the stoppage-time finish that was the only goal of Tuesday’s Football League Trophy win at the Globe Arena. Barry McEvoy worked in the club during the 1970s and has fond memories of his time there. He said: “I worked the doors at Top Rank for a few years before moving onto The Place. They were good times” The venue soon became a byword – along with the likes of Jollees – for … [Read more...] about Uptown and Top Rank-ing club was the place to be at the weekend
