What your relationship status says about your HEALTH – and your risk of dying from cancer

July 6, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk

IF you're single, you might look at people in relationships longingly. Alternatively you might rejoice in evenings to yourself and not having to spend time with annoying in-laws. But experts have now found that while we all have preferences as to what sort of relationship we would like to be in, your status could also speak volumes when it comes to your health . Medics in China found that the single life could mean you have a higher risk of dying from stomach cancer . In the UK each year there are around 6,500 new cases of the illness. That accounts for around 18 cases each day, with it being the 17th most common cancer in the country. Experts warn that the US could soon lose control of monkeypox due to lack of testing and limited access to vaccines

July 4, 2022 by www.dailymail.co.uk

Some experts are warning that gaps in testing and vaccine coverage for monkeypox will leave the United States vulnerable to losing control of its tropical virus outbreak. Public health leaders from the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD) and George Washington University (GW) warn that a fractured and lacking response to the outbreak so far can have severe consequences. Previous experts have warned that the virus has likely been spreading undetected in the U.S. for some time, and fear it could become endemic in the nation is not curbed soon. As if Friday - the most recently available data - the U.S. has logged 460 cases across 31 states and the District of Columbia. Iowa is believed to have recorded its first case over the weekend as well, though Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ) figures have not yet reflected it. Department of Conservation This supplied video outlines DOC's efforts to measure the long-term effects of 1080 in New Zealand. It claims bird numbers have doubled in one West Coast valley. (Video first published in January 2019) The Department of Conservation (DOC) is planning its largest predator control programme in response to a 'mega mast' event – exceptionally heavy seeding – in New Zealand forests. The $38 million programme will cover about 1 million hectares of conservation land across the country (the previous largest was 840,000ha in 2016). Aerial 1080 operations will cover more than 900,000ha, and trapping will take place across more than 66,000ha. Priority sites include Kahurangi, Abel Tasman, Arthur's Pass, Westland, Mt Aspiring and Fiordland national parks, the Caitlins and Whirinaki. The predator control effort aims to suppress rat, stoat and possum populations to protect native species. Monitoring by DOC had confirmed a predicted mega mast, or heavy … [Read more...] about DOC to launch huge predator control programme in response to ‘mega mast’

The Smartphone Psychiatrist

June 13, 2017 by www.theatlantic.com

S ometime around 2010, about two-thirds of the way through his 13 years at the helm of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)—the world’s largest mental-health research institution—Tom Insel started speaking with unusual frankness about how both psychiatry and his own institute were failing to help the mentally ill. Insel, runner-trim, quietly alert, and constitutionally diplomatic, did not rant about this. It’s not in him. You won’t hear him trash-talk colleagues or critics. Listen to the audio version of this article: Feature stories, read aloud: download the Audm app for your iPhone. Yet within the bounds of his unbroken civility, Insel began voicing something between a regret and an indictment. In writings and public talks, he lamented the pharmaceutical industry’s failure to develop effective new drugs for depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia; academic psychiatry’s overly cozy relationship with Big Pharma; and the paucity of treatments produced by the … [Read more...] about The Smartphone Psychiatrist

The 10 states with the most monkeypox cases

July 5, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Monkeypox has now been found in 31 U.S. states, as well as Washington D.C., as part of an outbreak that has seen over 5,700 confirmed cases worldwide across 52 countries. That's according to data from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ). Monkeypox is a virus originally passed to humans from animals and usually seen in Central and West Africa. However, it is currently spreading in populations within non-endemic countries across the world, including rapidly in Europe and North America . Symptoms may include fever, headaches , muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes and exhaustion, followed by a pustulous skin rash that may scar . These symptoms are similar, but less clinically severe, to those of smallpox , which was eradicated in the 1980s. While some earlier cases have been associated with gay and bisexual men—with many U.S. cases being linked to a single event —anyone of any sexuality can contract the disease, and there is no conclusive evidence … [Read more...] about The 10 states with the most monkeypox cases
