Indian security forces have seized dozens of "sticky bombs" during raids in India-administered Kashmir in recent months. "These bombs are a threat to security forces. We have issued orders to the security forces to remain alert," Rajesh Sharma, a senior police official in Samba district, told DW. Sticky bombs, or Magnet-attached Improvised Explosive Devices (MIEDs), can be attached to a vehicle and detonated remotely. They have been used by militants in Afghanistan over the past few months and although these bombs have not been used by Kashmiri insurgents, officials fear their presence could be a sign of impending violence in the disputed region. Muslim insurgents have been fighting Indian forces in the Indian-administered part of Kashmir — a region of 12 million people, about 70% of whom are Muslim — since 1989. Two of their three wars that India and Pakistan have fought since their independence in 1947, have been over Kashmir — which both claim in full, but rule in part. … [Read more...] about How ‘sticky bombs’ could impact Kashmir insurgency

India fake news problem fueled by digital illiteracy
In the summer of 2018, rumors began circulating on WhatsApp groups about a kidnapping gang operating in India's western state of Maharashtra. The rumors eventually inspired a lynch mob that killed five migrant workers who were suspected of being kidnappers after they arrived at a village in the state's Dhule district. This wasn't an isolated case. Child-abduction rumors spread by viral WhatsApp messages were connected to at least 17 murders across India in 2018. Rumors of cattle traders and organ harvesters also resulted in violent attacks on innocent people. Since then, India's fake news problem has continued to grow . More than 400 million Indians now use the internet, but digital literacy and social media regulation have yet to catch up. "People get cheap internet-based tech on their smartphones, but they don't have the necessary education on how to assess the veracity of claims made in the messages," said Rajneil Kamath a publisher at the Indian fact-checking portal … [Read more...] about India fake news problem fueled by digital illiteracy
City of London should woo unicorns with dual-class shares – review
Post-Brexit UK should look to attract companies to the London stock market through a listings structure that allows owners to maintain more control of their businesses, according to the findings of a review for the Treasury. The report by former EU commissioner Lord Hill, ordered by the chancellor last November, makes a series of recommendations aimed at making the City more attractive rather than a bonfire of the current rulebook to bolster its competitiveness. As Sky News revealed earlier this week, the main recommendation is to allow entrepreneurs to retain greater control of their companies - by formalising the creation of dual-class share structures in the premium listing segment of the London Stock Exchange. It … [Read more...] about City of London should woo unicorns with dual-class shares – review
Lockdown culture: ‘Miss You’ brings artists to the people
Before the pandemic, Berlin-based comedian Erika Ratcliffe toured every week, telling jokes to an eager public. Now, she gets by with the savings from a writing gig and is considering switching careers altogether. "A lot of people are doing online comedy shows on Zoom or via livestream, but I don’t think that works — I need the reaction from the audience." Ratcliffe is one of many creative-industry professionals in Germany who have found their lives turned upside down and their futures increasingly uncertain as the pandemic continues, particularly since the country went into a second lockdown in the fall of 2020. Theaters and museums remain closed until further notice. Some sectors have been especially hard-hit: The Berlin club scene, where just a year ago sweaty revelers were packed in like sardines dancing into the wee hours, is not expected not to return to full operation until the end of 2022, according to the Berlin Club Commission. Ratcliffe decided not to do Zoom or … [Read more...] about Lockdown culture: ‘Miss You’ brings artists to the people
