Politicians and officials accused of ‘gross human rights abuses’ are being sanctioned by the UK Government. The Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has announced sanctions against 10 people and one organisation in Russia, Venezuela, The Gambia and Pakistan. Travel bans and asset freezes will be imposed against three individuals in Russia accused of torture and other human rights violations against LGBTQ people in Chechnya. In Venezuela, sanctions are being imposed on senior security figures responsible for human rights violations in Nicolas Maduro’s ‘illegitimate regime’, the Foreign Office said. Mr Raab accused them of responsibility for force used during peaceful protests that ‘led to the death of demonstrators’. Russia and China are deepening practical cooperation despite Moscow's disastrous invasion of Ukraine with a shared goal of ejecting the U.S. from Europe and Asia, according to a senior NATO official. James Appathurai, NATO's deputy assistant secretary general for emerging security challenges, told Newsweek on the sidelines of this weekend's Helsinki Security Forum that alliance members "shouldn't be naïve" about the expanding Moscow-Beijing partnership. Former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who rarely speaks about his tenure as America's top diplomat, on Monday described a White House where he was at times contradicted by President Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, even as Tillerson was supposed to be overseeing U.S. foreign policy during the first year of the Trump administration. People in Japan were woken by the sound of air raid sirens today as the Government warned them to seek shelter from a North Korean missile flying overhead. The authorities issued what is thought to be the first evacuation alert in five years in response to the launch and temporarily suspended trains. North Korea has ramped up missile testing in recent weeks, but the early morning incident is thought to be the most significant since January – and will dramatically escalate tensions in the region. The ballistic missile is believed to have landed in the Pacific Ocean and not injured anyone in the northerly island of Hokkaido and the north-eastern Aomori prefecture. A Russian military train is reportedly transporting equipment for the nation’s nuclear weapons program to the frontlines of its war with Ukraine, sparking fears that Russian President Vladimir Putin could be preparing to use nuclear weapons on the battlefield amid his nation’s mounting losses in the war. The Telegraph reported that the train is “operated by the secretive nuclear division and linked to the 12th main directorate of the Russian ministry of defence.” The train, which was pictured on a Russian propaganda Telegram account, was reportedly on its way to Ukraine from central Russia.
