Go, Team
Editor’s Note: Read an interview with Samantha Hunt about her writing process. “T here was a woman, and everyone watched. Including me. We were at the fields where the kids play soccer. You know?” “I’m there three times a week.” “The place is surrounded by woods.” “I know. Three days a week. No joke. Were the kids playing?” “That’s why we noticed her. She walked across the field mid-game like she didn’t even see the rest of us and disappeared into the woods. The fireflies had started. Maybe 40 minutes before dark? The game must’ve been close to ending. In fact, it did end soon after.” “I was there,” another mother says. “I saw her go.” We’re in L’s kitchen waiting for our kids. Theatre’s role in helping revitalise te reo Māori
RNZ RNZ explores how Māori language used in theatre can be a way to nurture and grow the language. (Audio aired August 2018). Its Māori and Pākehā cast learnt seven different haka for the show, including one … [Read more...] about Theatre’s role in helping revitalise te reo Māori
Criminals ‘allowed to work from home’ as part of community service
Criminals have been allowed to “work from home” to complete their community sentences , a report by inspectors has revealed. Offenders have been allowed to carry out activities such as making face coverings and greeting cards at home to help clear a huge backlog of unfinished community payback work that built up during the pandemic. Probation officers said that the “innovative” work-from-home approach for offenders unable to attend “external” payback schemes had been so successful that they planned to continue them after the pandemic , according to the report by the four chief inspectors of the criminal justice system. Unpaid work is often attached to community sentences ordered by courts for less serious crimes such as theft, shoplifting, some assaults and burglaries. Offenders have to do between 40 and 300 hours depending on the severity of the crime. In an attempt to ensure justice is seen to be done, Boris Johnson has demanded that offenders guilty of anti-social … [Read more...] about Criminals ‘allowed to work from home’ as part of community service
