Here are three reasons why the Conservatives are on course to lose the next election. And why they’ll deserve to as well - unless they realise things need to change. This isn’t about Brexit. It’s about other things that directly affect the communities we live in. First, there’s the continuing collapse of local services. Just last week, the Government announced how much funding it was giving to local councils. Take Newcastle as an example. The basic grant from Government (known as the Settlement Funding Assessment) will be £115 million between 2019 and 2020 - down from £156 million in 2016-17. This cash comes from grants directly from the Treasury, and from a complex system in which business rates collected from local employers are distributed across the country. And the money is still going down. Austerity hasn’t ended. Funding for this year is lower than last year. At the same time, our council tax bills have increased faster than inflation, … [Read more...] about Three reasons why the Conservative Party will lose the next election
Rico has lived with HIV for almost a decade, confiding in only a small number of people in socially conservative Singapore, fearful of the reaction. Last month, he got a phone call saying information about his condition had been published online. Rico was one of 14,200 people whose HIV status, name and address were dumped on the internet by an American man who is believed to have obtained the confidential data from his partner -- a senior Singaporean doctor. "The LGBT community is angry and frustrated with the entire ordeal," said Rico, who did not want to be identified by his full name. The 31-year-old told AFP he was frightened that "the leaked information may change people's perception of me", adding that he had not told all his friends he was HIV-positive. "Society may be tolerant to the LGBT community but I do not think they are ready to accept a gay and HIV-positive individual. Not in my lifetime," he said. While Singapore is modern in many ways, observers say social attitudes … [Read more...] about Fury at HIV data leak in conservative Singapore
0 Have your say MP Shailesh Vara has hit out at the “shameful behaviour” of a fellow Conservative MP who blocked a bill to toughen the law on female genital mutilation (FGM). Sir Christopher Chope objected during the second reading of an amendment which would have altered the Children Act to allow the courts to issue protection orders if they are concerned a child may be at risk of FGM. He had previously objected to the bill during its first reading in November and, as a result, campaigners contacted him to request that he not do the same again. The MP for Christchurch in Dorset has said in the past that he objects to bills routinely because he believes they have not been scrutinised enough and that they should be properly debated. Despite his arguments that legislation should be scrutinised, however, he did not object to other private member’s bills put forward the same day by his colleagues. Parliamentary rules mean it only requires one MP to … [Read more...] about Peterborough MP Shailesh Vara hits out at ‘shameful’ fellow Conservative who blocked bill to toughen female genital mutilation law
Column by Nick Boles, MP for Grantham and Stamford Some people in the Grantham and Stamford Conservative Association are questioning whether I am still a Conservative. Leave aside that some of them were members of UKIP until very recently. Many have been Conservatives for a long time and they deserve an answer. It is 30 years since I first campaigned for a Conservative candidate in a parliamentary election, and 20 years since I first stood for election as a Conservative candidate for my local council. Throughout that time I have believed in a conservatism that is modern, moderate, open-minded and outward looking. I have wanted my party to be guided by liberal instincts, and inspired by progressive goals while also drawing on a deep well of conservative pragmatism and common sense. As an MP I was proud to support a Conservative Prime Minister, David Cameron, who introduced gay marriage, enshrined our commitment to give 0.7% of our national income in aid to the poorest people in the world, … [Read more...] about Am I conservative enough for you now?

Ross Thomson added that in the “interests of openness and transparacy” he had referred himself to an internal Conservative disciplinary panel to examine the claims. The Metropolitan Police were called out to the Strangers Bar in Westminister at about 11pm on Tuesday, after reports of an incident. Officers confirmed they spoke to three men about allegations of “sexual touching”. Mr Thomson, who was elected as the MP for Aberdeen South in 2017, was allegedly escorted out of the bar by police, although officers indicated that no formal charges or arrests were made.
