CHINA is "preparing for World War III" with its ominous South China Sea military build-up, a US Senator has claimed. Warships from the two countries have been engaged in tense stand-offs which have threatened to escalate into conflict in the disputed seas. China lays claim to vast swathes of ocean and many islands - but some parts are also claimed by the likes of Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia and Taiwan. The fresh concerns were raised by Republican Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma during a Senate hearing discussing the new challenges presented by Russia and China. “It’s like you’re preparing for World War III,” Inhofe said. “You’re talking to our allies over there and you wonder whose side they’re going to be on.” He said he was "concerned" that the message was not coming across, after China used a media blitz to present a host of illegal, artificial islands as "search and rescue centres". Inhofe believes the … [Read more...] about China ‘preparing for World War III’ with ominous South China Sea military build-up, US senator claims

Some political scientists call the South China Sea a potential hot spot of the 21 century, comparable in explosiveness to the Middle East. The intersection of the interests of regional powers, long-standing territorial disputes, active attempts by the United States and other Western countries to play on the contradictions of the dispute's participants, the passage of strategic sea routes through the South China Sea, large hydrocarbon reserves — all this forces us to take seriously any steps to increase a country's military presence in this region. © Photo : U.S. Navy‘Ram It’: Chinese Colonel Offers Solution to US Ships Transiting South China SeaThe militarisation of the South China Sea's waters carried out by one side, forces other states in the region to increase their military spending, complicates the search for compromises and increase the risks … [Read more...] about Indonesia Establishes Military Base in South China Sea, but for What Purpose?
WAR between the US and Chinese forces in the South China Sea could break out in 2019, leading experts fear. Concerns are mounting the two superpowers could become embroiled in a terrifying conflict in the directly contested region which could kill thousands of people. Malcolm Davis, a senior analyst in defence strategy and capability at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute in Canberra, told CNN: "China is not going to ease up on its attempts to control the South China Sea in its entirety. "Basically, what the Chinese want to do is make the South China Sea their lake." Mr Davis added that Trump administration would be unlikely to back off in the face of Chinese pressure. Gregory Poling, an Asia and maritime law expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told Al Jazeera in October: "There's a whole basket of issues that could lead to a US-China conflict. "The South China Sea is the thorniest. It gets right at the heart of US primacy in the region, the … [Read more...] about US and China both refuse to back down over South China Sea row that experts fear could trigger World War 3
However, Western powers have continuously cited "freedom of navigation" under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to justify their actions. Sputnik spoke with Saikat Bhattacharya, research scholar at Jadavpur University in Kolkutta, India, about China's claims to sovereignty over the South China Sea dating back to the 1400s, in addition to greater implications for Western powers and their strategies in the disputed maritime region. What Have Western Scholars Historically Argued About the South China Sea? Saikat explained how the Middle Kingdom acquired the South China Sea during Han Chinese rule in the 1400s, leading to cartographic advancements which ultimately gave the sea its name. "China's claims to the South China Sea are purely based upon the Han Chinese Ming dynasty, where Admiral Zheng He led … [Read more...] about Western Powers Will Never Give Up US Policy in South China Sea—Research Scholar
Four photos apparently depicting the moment a Chinese destroyer had a close encounter with USS Decatur in the South China Sea have surfaced online, showing the blockbuster ‘near collision’ encounter of the two navies. The US Navy pictures, obtained by gCaptain website and authenticated by a naval source to Stars and Stripes, depict the tense encounter of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer with the Chinese destroyer Lanzhou (170) off the Spratly Islands last Sunday. In the sequence of pictures, the USS Decatur, pictured on the left, is seen next to the Chinese Warship that was dispatched by Beijing to chase the US vessel into neutral waters and away from the Gaven Reefs, which are claimed by China. The Lanzhou, pictured on the right, does seem to approach “within 45 yards” of the American ship, as the American Navy has claimed earlier this week. One of the four black and white pictures also shows the USS Decatur maneuvering to avoid a collision. … [Read more...] about ‘Near collision’: Leaked photos show Chinese ship chasing away US destroyer in South China Sea
