Baton-bearers are taking it through Portland, Weymouth, Poole and Bournemouth. The tour began in London in October and is visiting 180 places during the Queen's Platinum Jubilee year. The baton ends its 294-day journey in Birmingham on 28 July, the day of the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. It began its journey at the Eden Project in Cornwall earlier , before heading for Dorset via Plymouth and Exeter. It arrived at Portland Marina and the National Sailing Academy shortly after 15:00 BST. Boots stock market float back on the table as £5bn sale collapses
T he American owners of Boots may revive plans for stock market float next year after scrapping the sale of Britain’s biggest chemist to a Wall Street buyout fund and Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani. Walgreens, which merged with Boots in 2014 in a deal worth £9bn, said none of the offers for the “adequately reflects the high potential value of Boots and No7 Beauty Company”. The Illinois-headquartered company said bidders had struggled to arrange bank loans to buy Boots after financial markets “suffered unexpected and dramatic change”. Private equity fund Apollo and Mr Ambani had been in pole position to acquire Boots after Walgreens chairman Stefano Pessina put the business up for sale in January. But a £5bn approach — considerably lower than the £7bn Mr Pessina is said to have wanted — fell through. The event involves the baton travelling around England for 29 days, before arriving at the opening ceremony in Birmingham on 28 July. First batonbearer Oli Turrell received the baton from Denise Lewis, president of Team England at the Eden Project. During the day it toured the Eden Project and was met by a flotilla of vessels in Plymouth, Devon. The baton, which is made of copper, aluminium and brass, was later taken on a paddleboard in Exeter. At the Eden Project, 200 local year six school children were invited to welcome the baton, which was taken around the Eden Project via some of its iconic locations, including its zip line and Rainforest Biome. Fireworks were set off in the early hours of Sunday outside a Liverpool hotel where Brentford FC players were staying ahead of their clash with Everton. The Merseyside team, managed by Frank Lampard, are desperate to secure Premier League survival as they are currently in 16th place in the table - close to the relegation zone. Brentford are in 11th spot and already assured of top-flight football next season. Flares were also let off by fans outside the stadium before the game. Video showed fireworks lighting up the sky outside the Innside Hotel in Liverpool city centre at around 3.30am as the Brentford team slept inside having made the journey to face the Toffees at Goodison Park.
